The short-lived series The Manhunter: A Quinn Martin Production, 31 MAI 2009
Author: raysond from Chapel Hill, North Carolina

The short-lived crime drama series "The Manhunter" was another one of those classy detective shows that were all over the place during the 1970's,and who would have guess that Ken Howard's astounding television career would be the center of this series(his greatest work was yet to come in the latter half of the decade playing Coach Reeves in one of the most critically acclaimed TV-series of the late 1970's "The White Shadow"). "The Manhunter" was another one of those classy nostalgia shows produced by the great Quinn Martin, and this wasn't the first time that QM Productions has done this: It started with the 1920's urban crime-drama "The Untouchables"(ABC:1959-1963),and later on with another QM Produced series "Banyan"(NBC:1972-1973),about a 1930's Los Angeles Private Investigator. Of the 23 episodes that this series produced."The Manhunter" ran for one season on CBS-TV from September 11,1974 until March 5,1975. Quinn Martin served as executive producer for this series along with fellow QM producers Adrian Samish,John Conwell(in charge of production),and Arthur Fellows under QM Productions/Warner Bors. Television and CBS-TV.

Back in the 1970's there were a lot of detective shows and some nostalgia shows. "The Manhunter" was both a detective show and a nostalgia show starring Ken Howard as Dave Barrett who wasn't really a private investigator but a modern-day bounty hunter who delivers his own style of justice and taking on the baddies during the Great Depression period of the 1930's. The setting for this series was in the Midwestern United States. Dave Barrett was also a veteran of World War I. He returns home to find his family is having a hard time so from there Dave decides to supplement the family's income by collecting the bounties on the Dillinger-Capone-esquire gangsters that were prevalent in terrorizing the countryside and chaos in their wake, and it was up to the bounty hunter and sometimes the local authorities that brought them to justice. But Dave Barrett went from state-to-state whenever his services were needed(from Kansas to Colorado and other places) where there was a crime committed and take on the baddies each week.

Dave also wherever he goes has a car equipped with hiding spots for some of his war souveniers(where else you'll see a 1930's custom design Ford sedan complete with a Colt. 45 auto and Thompson submachine gun,not to mention a bayonet,a shotgun and a high-powered Winchester rifle and other goodies for taking out the baddies that were hidden in certain sections of the car)where each week Barrett sets off to earn milk and bread money and other means to support his family. Speaking of the cast, the producers got veteran actor Ford Rainey(as Dave's father James Barrett),along with Claudia Bryar(Dave's mother Mary Barrett),and Hilary Thompson(as Dave's sister Liz Barrett). Also rounding out the cast was Dave's back-up and close friend Sheriff Paul Tate(played by Robert Hogan). Some of the episodes were brilliant in their own right and set the standard for some of the greatest crime drama shows ever to grace the 1970's

Guest Stars for this series brought out Hollywood's Best-most of them were also Quinn Martin stockplayer regulars from other QM Produced shows: Ida Lupino, Andrew Duggan, Dabney Coleman,Michael Burns, Mitchell Ryan, Bo Hopkins, Glenn Corbett, Brooke Bundy, Leslie Nielsen,Harry Lauter, William Schallert, William Windom, Harry Guardino, David White, Roy Thinnes, Jack Donner, Don Stroud, Woody Strode, Susan Oliver, Rhodes Reason, Parley Baer, Conrad Janis, Collin Paxton, Lin McCarthy, and Allen Jaffe
