Timur Bekmambetov’s Obsession With ScreenLife Storytelling: After Snapchat ‘Dead Of Night’ Launch, The Bible, Cyrano, Romeo & Juliet Are Next
Timur Bekmambetov is leaning in heavily on what he calls ScreenLife storytelling, a disruptive format which eschews traditional cameras for methods that visually drive the narrative through stories that unfold from the Pov of smartphone and computer screens, where most of us now spend the bulk of our waking hours.

Microsoft and Bekmambetov’s Russia-based Studio Bazelevs have 50 projects percolating in ScreenLife format. It just set a deal to establish a ScreenLife-platform based on Microsoft technologies and will create a joint laboratory for the production of films in Russia. Bazelevs will switch to the Microsoft Azure cloud to make the tools for creating ScreenLife content “as accessible as possible,” the companies said. One of the programs that will run on Microsoft technology is Clickorder, which allows for the recording of interactive videos. The companies will also create a joint R&d laboratory in which they intend to develop products and

‘The Shawshank Redemption’ at 25: Hope Springs Eternal in One of the Greatest Movies of All Time

‘The Shawshank Redemption’ at 25: Hope Springs Eternal in One of the Greatest Movies of All Time
There’s a line in The Shawshank Redemption where Morgan Freeman’s character, Red, tells us, “Prison is no fairy tale world.” Except that’s exactly what it is in this movie. Make no mistake about it: Frank Darabont’s 1994 prison drama, based on a Stephen King novella, endures as a kind of modern fairy tale, albeit one […]

‘Black and Blue’ Film Review: Naomie Harris Plays a Conflicted Cop in By-the-Numbers Drama

‘Black and Blue’ Film Review: Naomie Harris Plays a Conflicted Cop in By-the-Numbers Drama
It’s kind of funny that, just a few years ago, Frank Grillo was in “The Purge: Anarchy,” in which he struggled to survive the night against morally corrupt civilians with a 12-hour license to kill, and now he’s playing a cop tripping off a limitless authority to murder in “Black and Blue.” It’s this same professional-pedestrian throughline to violence that is a major theme in this prosaic police drama from director Deon Taylor (“The Intruder”).

Corrupt cop narratives aren’t exactly fresh on screen, and Taylor’s film doesn’t shy away from blatant callbacks to other more innovative entries in the genre. For instance, composer Geoff Zanelli (“Traffik”) uses a piece that recalls the thunderous “Sicario” score, while Taylor and screenwriter Peter A. Dowling (“Flightplan”) borrow from the classic bloody bathtub scene from “Training Day.”

But Taylor tries to do the now-inevitable filmmaker exercise of infusing

Morgan Freeman & Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment Developing Western TV Series About African American Lawman Bass Reeves
Exclusive: Morgan Freeman and Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment has optioned Arthur T. Burton’s book Black, Red & Deadly for a TV series that they’ll develop about 19th century Arkansas slave-turned U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves. Revelations will work on the project with Malcolm Spellman, Ben Watkins, Josef Sawyer and Grey’s Anatomy actor James Pickens Jr.

Reeves was a notable lawman, a ‘Lone Ranger’ before there ever was one, whose legend has largely been ignored by history. Reeves captured 3K criminals –more than Pat Garrett, Wild Bill Hickok, and Wyatt Earp– with the use of flamboyant detective skills that were ahead of their time, i.e. sting operations to dressing up in disguises. His story unfurled against the backdrop of the birth of statehood and the foundation of Oklahoma. He partnered with a brash Irishman named Chauncey Lee, and together they were tasked with the impossible: impose the

'It: Chapter Two' to consolidate grip on Hollywood international box office crown

Angel Has Fallen crosses $100m worldwide.

Warner Bros Pictures International’s It: Chapter Two has raced to $120.9m internationally and $230m worldwide and should not be unduly bothered by STXinternational’s first wave of releases for Hustlers.

Millennium Media’s Angel Has Fallen has crossed $100m worldwide in a much-needed tonic for independent box office, and Sony’s Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood is nearing the $200m mark, although it is unlikely to cross the milestone this weekend.

Horror sequel It: Chapter Two ruled global box office last weekend and looks good to stay top of the Hollywood pile.
