Whatever Happened to Elizabeth (Alexandra Holden) from Friends?

There are reasons why professor’s should never, never ever ever ever, date their students. In high school it’s a big no-no since, well, the underage thing is kind of impossible to get around and one really shouldn’t try unless you think you look good in orange. In college it’s mostly legal since most people are of legal age and are technically adults. But it’s still a practice that many frown on since it tends to blur the line between the student and teacher and can cause a great deal of problems if not taken seriously. But when it came to

I’m always amazed at how long a film will stay stagnate on my Netflix list. This one sat on it for I’m thinking around six months or so. What’s even more amazing are the pre conceived notions about the film that I get from the synopsis and the cover art. I’m usually more surprised than anything else, and that can be good or bad. Exclusive: In a World... Gag Reel
Actress Lake Bell, best known for her work on the small screen in Childrens' Hospital and How to Make It in America, made her feature writing and directing debut last year with the critically-acclaimed indie comedy In a World.... The filmmaker also stars as Carol, a young voice over artist trying to escape the shadow of her legendary father (Fred Melamed). As her career begins to blossom, she finds herself competing directly with her old man. With the Blu-ray and DVD debuting earlier this week, we have an exclusive gag reel featuring Lake Bell, Rob Corddry, Ken Marino, Demetri Martin and Michaela Watkins trying to keep a straight face for the camera.

In this hilarious and idiosyncratic comedy, Carol (Lake Bell) is an underachieving voice coach living in the shadow of her egotistical father Sam (Fred Melamed), the undisputed king of the voice-over industry. When Sam kicks her out, Carol

In A World…

Written and directed by Lake Bell

USA, 2013

In A World… tells the story of Carol Solomon (Lake Bell), a struggling young voice coach who lives in the shadows of her acknowledged “king of voiceovers” father, Sam Soto (Fred Melamed). Sam kicks Carol out of his house so he can live alone with his new girlfriend, the 30-year-old Jamie (Alexandra Holden). Meanwhile, a new film series, The Amazon Games, plans to revive the classic “In a world where…” style of film trailers (made famous by the late Don Lafontaine). Soto bows out to give his heir a shot, but after Carol provides a temp track, the executive producer of the film is intrigued, and suddenly Carol finds herself in a world where daughter is pitted against father.

Unfortunately, the film surveys the idea of being a witty and empowering chant for young women trying to make it in

In A World… may be more famous these days as the start to a mock trailer, but as is often the case, before there was parody it was used in earnest. The directorial debut of Lake Bell looks at the underappreciated world of voice over work and boils it down to a hilarious little microcosm all of its own. Bell takes the lead role herself as the daughter of one of the best in the industry, and although currently working as a vocal coach she is soon climbing the ladder to the big time of movie trailer voice-over work.

In A World… Review

[This is a re-post of my review from the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. In a World...opens today in limited release.] I usually like movies that have some sense of structure and pacing. If they don't have these qualities, then I like these films to be truly daring and outside-the-box. Lake Bell's In a World… is a rambling mess of a nice little comedy with too many characters, and has almost no sense of pacing or flow. But somehow, it's still a charming flick. Bell gives a fun lead performance, and she surrounds herself with a likable cast. Even the subtext is cutesy. In a World… should be a movie that I found a slog, but somehow, Bell's film won me over despite its glaring flaws. Carol (Bell) is a voice coach in Hollywood who aspires to be the voice over trailers like the great Don Lafontaine who coined the famous trailer phrase, "In a world…" Her hopes are repeatedly crushed by her self-centered father Sam (Ken Melamed), who is
