Enlisted in the U.S. Army on 21 April 1944 during World War II.
He was also an artist: painter (in oil, water colors, pen and ink), a sculptor, a novelist and author of non-fiction articles.
Wrote and directed 21 successful TV pilots. He helmed some of the most memorable and highly regarded early episodes of The Twilight Zone (1959)--The Twilight Zone: The Invaders (1961), The Twilight Zone: Eye of the Beholder (1960), The Twilight Zone: The Howling Man (1960)--as well as some of the best miniseries of the 1970s and 1980s, including Captains and the Kings (1976) and North and South, Book I (1985).
