A Wicked Tale: Walking Dead Producers Create Shared Fairytale Horror Universe
Shared universes seem to be all the rage these days, and today we have word on another one in the works. This time it will be a shared universe of horror films based on reimagined versions of classic fairytales and public domain characters from Circle of Confusion, the production company behind The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.

The first film in the series will be A Wicked Tale, which is described as a contemporary horror take on the classic Brothers Grimm tale, Hansel & Gretel. This flick is based on an original script written by Pay The Ghost and I.T. screenwriter Dan Kay that tells the tale of two college students who stumble upon something sinister in the local woods after an altercation with a fellow student leads to deadly consequences.

Along with being the production company behind AMC's hit zombie series The Walking Dead and it's

Found footage may not be a theatrical sensation anymore (if it ever really was), but the genre is alive and well on the VOD market. Well, alive at least. It’s accessible in a Diy sense due to not really needing actors or a budget in order to create, quality be damned. A few years back one of the most notable entries was The Houses October Built, which was a hybrid of documentary footage (the full documentary is included as a bonus on the first film’s Blu-ray) and a narrative through line. The doc is about haunts around the country

I hate found footage movies. Scratch that. I fucking loathe found footage movies, with every bone in my body. The trope is tired, played out and the Laziest way to make a horror film. Period. Since the format exploded with The Blair Witch Project, filmmakers (and non-filmmakers) everywhere have

DVD Review – The Houses of Halloween (2014)

The Houses of Halloween, 2014

Directed by Bobby Roe.

Starring Brandy Schaefer, Mikey Roe, Zack Andrews, Jeff Larson and Bobby Roe.

Synopsis:

Five filmmakers set off on a road trip to track down alternative underground Halloween festivities and the ultimate scare-filled experience. Just when their search seems to reach a dead-end, strange and disturbing things start happening, meaning the experience has found them…

The press notes to this mildly diverting celebration of Halloween claim to reinvent the found footage horror movie and blur the lines between horror and reality. An admirable ambition; what with below-par found footage movies creating a whole sub-genre of horror flicks. Unfortunately, The Houses of Halloween takes an interesting concept – the sheer cultish excesses of Halloween in America and levels it out into a formulaic and rather lacking plot structure.

Familiar horror tropes and stock jolts and jumps are carried off in a curiously plodding manner until

A genuinely creepy concept that once again reinvents the “found-footage” horror movie and blurs the lines between reality and fiction. Following five filmmakers on a road trip to find an alternative Halloween tourist attraction, it builds to a nerve-shredding climax that haunt you for days.

Exclusive Interview With The Cast And Director Of The Houses October Built

Just when you think you have seen every conceivable version of a found footage movie, one comes along with a fresh and unnerving angle. That movie is The Houses October Built, which was co-written and directed by Bobby Roe.

The film follows five friends who rent an Rv and travel from town to town visiting the haunted houses that are put up for Halloween. However, this group isn’t terribly interesting in checking out typical haunted houses. Instead, they are determined to visit some underground Halloween haunts which promise an extremely horrifying time for those who dare to enter them. They soon discover what they’re looking for, but things then take a very, very dark turn.

At the recent press day that was held for the film, I had the chance to speak with Roe, as well as his cast (Brandy Schaefer, Zack Andrews, Mikey Roe and Jeff Larson), for an exclusive interview.

Well, here we go again, creeps. Stop me if you’ve heard this one: a group of ultra-obnoxious boobs (buffoons, not annoying breasts) run afoul of a (possibly) supernatural menace and decide to film every little nuance of their strange journey beyond the ken of the mortal realm. Yup, ever since Blair Witch dedazzled audiences with its half-arsed blend of F-bombs, piss-poor improv and non-existent depictions of gruesome ghoulies, anyone with a buck o’ five and a camera thinks they are a cinematic wunderkind. And that brings us to The Houses October Built.

Houses begins like so many of these things do: a group of friends with diarrhea of the mouth meander around for a bit, all while
