Spring Budget prompts UK creative industry concerns

Spring Budget prompts UK creative industry concerns
Freelancers will be hit by tax rise for the self-employed but qualifications announcement praised.

UK chancellor of the exchequer Philip Hammond’s Spring Budget is “a slap in the face” for freelancers working in the creative industries, according to one media trade union.

The most controversial aspect of the budget has been the rise in National Insurance Contributions (Nic) for self-employed workers, from the current level of 9% to 10% in 2018 and 11% in 2019 for those making a profit of more than £8,060.

The hike will apply to freelancers earning less than £43,000. The government claims that this will raise £145m a year by 2021-22.

According to Creative Skillset’s 2015 employment survey of the UK’s creative industry workforce, 43% of all workers are freelance. In the film production sector, that number rose to 89%.

Bectu estimates that 15,000 of its 40,000 members are freelance.

Gerry Morrissey, head of Bectu, the media sector of trade union Prospect, described the move as “unfair and unjustified” in a media

Strictly Come Dancing: the quarter-final – as it happened

It’s Musicals Week! Was Claudia able to pull off a Lion King salsa? And how did Judge Rinder fare as a Jersey Boy?

7.57pm GMT

So that’s it for another Strictly week, and only two to go! Thank you all for joining in, and I’ll see you next Saturday at 6.50pm for the semi-final, which involves Two Dances. It’s the final push, so let’s make it count. See you next week! Hx

7.57pm GMT

Judge Rinder thanks the judges, because he knows how difficult it is to be a judge. He then makes Oksana cry by being entirely lovely.

They dance their final dance to Defying Gravity from Wicked, and I am already missing Rinder’s sense of fun (a lot), his latin hips (a bit) and his dancing sex face (less so). Rinder has without doubt been on the biggest journey of this year’s Strictly quarter finalists,

“Star Trek Beyond” gets the Mondo Poster Treatment

  • Comicmix
Star Trek Beyond, Paramount Pictures’ third installment in the rebooted series, has received a poster from Mondo, executed by artist Matt Taylor to celebrate the Digital HD and Blu-ray release of the film, which came out this week.

This limited edition poster is not for sale so fans will have to look for contests or other opportunities to acquire a copy. ComicMix was provided with one, which will be auctioned off for charity at Farpoint in February 2017.

Star Trek Beyond, starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, was directed by Justin Lin and was critically acclaimed as a much needed course correction after the disastrous Star Trek Into Darkness. The $185 million production underperformed at the box office although a fourth film in the series has already been announced, with Chris Hemsworth returning as George Kirk, father to Pine’s James T, Kirk. No screenwriters, director, or other details have been released.

Ahead of his appearance as a featured artist at MondoCon 2016 this weekend in Austin, TX, we caught up with Roper for a special "Meet the Artist" Q&A feature, and we also have a look at some of the eye-popping artwork he'll be bringing to this year's MondoCon.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Arik. What sparked your initial interest in being an artist?

Arik Roper: It was a natural path for me, being an artist. Both my parents were artists. I was surrounded by it and I instinctively was drawn toward it, and received a lot of encouragement.

Your art often transports people deep into the realms of fantasy and horror.
