[1939 comment on Deanna Durbin] When she sings, there is no sense of the footlights about it. She sings for music, not for show. She isn't one of those sopranos who expect the audience to pay out on the high notes. Her singing, which must have been magnificently taught to her, is still, praise heaven, cool, clean, and scholarly.
