Genre friction: why we should learn to get over genre snobbery

There’s a lot of snobbery surrounding genre in books, television and movies. Here, Andrew explains why we shouldn’t judge a story on genre alone…

Many years ago, when I was undergoing higher education in exchange for a modest sum and a waste of the taxpayer's money, I was in a pub. The people in the pub with me were talking about music. I forget which band. It might have been Scouting For Girls – I can't remember. The important thing was that it was a band generally treated with scorn.

One of our friends then said that our getting annoyed about such a band was pointless, with the immortal line, “It's just music, you either like it or you don't”. She was greeted with a mixture of celebratory laughter and gazes of tundra-like hostility.

Essentially, though, contentious though the use of ‘just’ might be in that sentence, she was entirely correct.

Jls fans “burst into tears” as the band pulls out of T4 on the Beach!

Jls - X Factor 2008

The Daily Star today reports that Jls fans “burst into tears” on hearing the news that the boy band had had to cancel their scheduled performance at yesterday’s T4 on the Beach.

The band had to pull out after they weren’t given enough time to set up sound checks or rehearse.

Band member Marvin Humes, 26, posted an apology on the band’s Facebook page which read, “We are So sorry that we are not performing. It’s something beyond our control.”

The paper adds, “Around 50,000 music lovers basked in glorious sunshine to see N-Dubz, The Wanted, Girls Aloud star Nicola Roberts, Olly Murs, Scouting For Girls and Sugababes.”

Scouting For Girls in Twitter mix-up

Scouting For Girls have accidentally linked the Twitter stream for their new website to a random Twitter user's account. Chapman posted comments including: "Oops... turns out Elvis Is dead. Let us know of factual innacuracies in our other songs and we'll write (irritating) corrected version (sic)" and "Working on some more s**t tunes." (more)

Roll Deep claim first ever UK number one

Roll Deep have claimed their first ever UK number one this week with new single 'Good Times'. After leading the midweeks, the London-based grime collective shot to the top spot, ahead of Usher, who remained at number two with 'Omg'. Their previous two singles 'The Avenue' and 'Shake A Leg' failed to reach the top ten. Group member Target said: "Thanks a lot for everyone who have followed us since 2002. This is amazing for us. We're overwhelmed. Our tune should've been called 'Omg'." Diana Vickers fell to fourth place from last week's chart victory with her debut single 'Once', as Plan B's 'She Said' rose to number three. Elsewhere, Chipmunk also slid down the list to fifth place with 'Until You Were Gone', as did Scouting For Girls with 'This Ain't A Love Song', (more)

The people who ruined the decade

Part 4: From Michael Cera to Frank Black

Michael Cera Deluding awkward indie boys into thinking they'd get the girl since 2003

Before Michael Cera starred in mega-hits Juno and Superbad, the typical star of a Us teen movie was more likely to be the wonderfully horrible Steve Stifler from American Pie. Since Cera broke out from Arrested Development, lead teen males are now the types who wear newish Sonic Youth T-shirts, stare at their tennis shoes while muttering about Zooey Deschanel and pack as much charm as a destitute leprechaun. At first, Cera's emergence was a huge victory for the geek: 15-year-old Decemberists fans finally had a hero just like them! But then he went and made Year Zero, Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist and Paper Heart and we went back to our working on our poetry.
