Like A Boss – Review

In the last couple of weeks we’ve welcomed a new year and a new decade, so let’s continue the festivities down at the multiplex with a new flick that celebrates friendship. Now we know that those “bad boys” will be back next week, so we’re being treated to a rarity, a female “buddy” comedy. Yes, there were a few of these attempts last year. The Hustle and Charlie’S Angels flopped, while Book Smart soared with it’s two devoted high school heroines. In some ways, this new flicks expands on the latter film, namely what happens to these two lifelong BFFs as they continue on well past their academic years and begin a business together. Plus, in a refreshing change from the studio norm, there are no messy romantic entanglements to come between them (perhaps we’re past the cliche of “fighting over the same guy”). Still,

Salma Hayek on Women in Hollywood: ‘We’re On the Right Path, and We’re Not Going to Stop’
Salma Hayek is very hopeful about the future for women in Hollywood.

“What I can tell you is that a lot more women are directing and acting and writing and producing. And there are a lot more movies made about women and for women because the audience was neglected,” the star told Variety at the premiere of her new comedy “Like a Boss“ in New York on Tuesday night. “We’re on the right path. And we’re not going to stop.”

The Oscar nominee was joined by her co-stars Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrne. “Like a Boss” follows best friends Mia and Mel (Haddish and Byrne) who join forces to run their own boutique cosmetics company. When the prospect of a big buyout offer from a notorious titan of the beauty industry (Hayek) tempts them, their lifelong bond — and their business — is put in jeopardy.

‘Like a Boss’: Film Review
Its economic message might be fuzzy. Its feminism, too. But best-friend comedy “Like a Boss” rides Tiffany Haddish and Rose Byrnes’s frisky and believable chemistry to laughs — some worn, some crude, but more than a few delivered deftly and consistently enough to keep audiences smiling if not doubled over.

The two share the house Mia inherited, the one where Mel came to live as a teen when her own family cratered. They were enterprising girls who grew into inventive businesswomen, all the while remaining best friends. They complete each other. Yes, in the rom-com sense, the film — directed by Miguel Arteta — makes clear. Friendship can be one of the great romances, after all.

Owners of their own cosmetics line and boutique, Mia and Mel’s deep affection is tested when cosmetics titan Claire Luna, played by Salma Hayek, swoops in to invest in their self-named company. They are nearly $500,000 in debt,

  • Deadline
Production is underway on Season 3 of Showtime’s The Chi with a new showrunner and executive producer. Additionally Birgundi Baker, who plays Kiesha, has been promoted to series regular, and Luke James, La La Anthony (Power) and Lil Rel Howery have signed on to recurring roles.

The showrunner change follows the exit last season of Jason Mitchell, one of the series’ leads, who was let go in May over allegations of inappropriate behavior. Floyd previously issued a statement that producer and creator Lena Waithe was made aware of complaints against Mitchell during the show’s first season, but he was still written in to return for the show’s third season. Mitchell was cut after Season 2 had wrapped.

The Chi” has appointed a new showrunner for its forthcoming third season.

Writer Justin Hillian will take over from season 2 showrunner Ayanna Floyd Davis, who departs as the series looks to emerge from the cloud of the Jason Mitchell misconduct affair.

It was revealed in May that Mitchell had been fired from the series due to allegations of harassment from Floyd Davis and co-star Tiffany Boone. It was subsequently revealed that Mitchell had engaged in similar behavior on the set of the Netflix film “Desperados,” leading to his dismissal from that project as well. Showtime co-president Gary Levine said in August that Mitchell’s character would be killed off.

Floyd Davis addressed Mitchell’s misconduct directly in a statement issued back in May.

“When I took the helm in season two, it was Lena who informed me of the issues between Jason Mitchell and Tiffany Boone from season one, and
