Newswire: Vin Diesel’s still family, Michelle Rodriguez says after Fast & Furious critique

Despite all their talk about family, the cast of the Fast & Furious series is shadier than a forest preserve. Last year, series star Dwayne Johnson whipped up a sticky-sweet cyclone of speculation after referring to unnamed co-stars as “Candy asses,” eventually leading to the shocking revelation that it was lovable lunkhead and sometime Selena Gomez duet partner Vin Diesel who was the candy ass in question. Now series co-star Michelle Rodriguez is brewing up a fresh pot of faux-gearhead partisanship, clarifying that while certain members of the Fast & Furious team are guilty of neglecting the franchise’s female characters, Diesel is just a big ol’ sweetheart who would sooner drink a fancy Belgian beer than disrespect women.

Pedal to the Metal: The Ultimate Ranking of 'The Fast and the Furious' Franchise

When The Fast and the Furious was released in June 2001, the signs did not portend its eventual future as one of cinema’s most durable and lucrative franchises. The original film, based on a magazine article about street racing, didn’t feature any A-list stars and wasn’t expected to make a dent in a summer featuring “surefire” box-office hits like Pearl Harbor, Tomb Raider and Planet of the Apes.

More: 29 Things You Probably Didn't Know About the 'The Fast and the Furious' Films

But then the Nos kicked in and audiences ate up the adventures of Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker) and the rest of their motley crew as they drove fast, executed capers, bested rivals and espoused family values in a series of increasingly over-the-top movies that helped reshape the action genre and showed Hollywood that a diverse cast could equal global box-office success.

Ten Best: Music Documentaries

  • Nerdly
Music documentaries are a genre unto their own – sometimes they give you a glimpse behind the scenes of your favourite band, and sometimes they’re about someone you’ve never heard about who become your favourite band. With that in mind, here’s a rundown of the Top 10 Best Music Documentaries of all time:

Anvil! The Story Of Anvil

An opening of Heavy Metal icons such Slash, Lemmy and Lars Ulrich singing the praises of a band you’ve never heard of makes you think it’s all just a Spinal Tap style spoof. But no, after never quite hitting the big time in the early 80s, Canadian Metal band Anvil have still been plugging away despite the lack of success – at the beginning of the film frontman Steve “Lips” Kudlow is having to make a living delivering school dinners in Toronto! "Thanks to a capable cast and to Rodriguez’s confident writing, Mañana a esta hora feels fully realized. Charity Begins Alone

Adam Miller  Who Would Give His Only Song Away (Chelsea Records)

When Wes Farrell, the man who penned the perennial evergreen "Hang On Sloopy," and was overseer to the phenomenal chart successes of the Partridge Family and David Cassidy, set up his own record label in 1972, his maiden release wasn't a sure fire pop confection. He began proceedings with an exquisitely crafted collection of psych outsider introspection. Adam Miller, his new discovery and recipient of this gracious act of faith didn't set the world aflame, he didn't even darken it's edge, and today remains unknown, his album the victim of at best a misreading of the small print one is required to field when stumbling across an artist with no fame attached to the name above the title, more than four decades after the event. Chelsea Records became an outlet for pop and disco, especially the wonderfully camp and catchy Disco Tex and his Sexolettes,

Garbus earned her first Oscar nomination in 1998 for her documentary The Farm: Angola, USA.

Music-related docs have been a hot topic for the Academy in years past,
