Interview with Jean-Paul Ly: “Jailbreak marks the beginning of the action film industry for the country”

Jean-Paul Ly, is an actor and 2017 Award Nominee Action designer/performer, of Chinese and Cambodian origins currently based in London. Trained at the Identity Drama School of London (UK Double Award Winning Part-Time Drama School), Jean-Paul won the “Clive Dailey Award for Best Actor 2014” , for the performance play of “Constellations” (Nick Payne).

With more than 25 years of martial arts practice, Jean-Paul started his work in the film industry in the action / stunt dept, for which he has been nominated twice in 2017:

– The prestigious American SAG Awards, regarding his work on critically acclaimed “Doctor Strange” (Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble).

– followed by a nomination for Taurus Awards on his work for “Now you See Me 2” (Best Fight).

Interview with Céline Tran: “Most of all I had to learn to fight in the heat!”

Having retired from the adult industry since 2013, Céline Tran has since appeared in several mainstream productions. In 2014, she played a recurring character in the French web fiction Le Visiteur du futur. Also in 2014, she wrote the script for Heart Breaker, the sixth volume of the French comic book horror series DoggyBags. In 2016, she started working as a DJ, and writing a blog focusing on cultural and sexual themes. She also underwent three years of martial arts training in order to secure roles in action films. In 2017, she hosted on Facebook Live, for the French community website NextPLZ, a show about sexuality aimed at youngsters, published a second graphic novel in the DoggyBags collection, and created a YouTube channel dedicated to sports.

Cambodian Action Film ‘The Prey’ From ‘Jailbreak’ Director Gets UK Distribution Deal
Exclusive: Fledgling UK firm Lightbulb Film Distribution has picked up Busan and London Film Festival survival-thriller The Prey, which has been described as Cambodia’s first $1M-budgeted action movie.

Lightbulb acquired the foreign-language title last week from Raven Banner at their first market, the Efm in Berlin. Set in the Cambodian jungle, the well-received genre pic is writer-director Jimmy Henderson’s follow-up to Jailbreak, Netflix’s first Cambodian acquisition.

Gu Shang Wei and Vithaya Pansringarm (Only God Forgives) lead cast with fight choreography handled by Lucy and Doctor Strange stunt performer Jean-Paul Ly. In The Prey, undercover Chinese cop Xin is on a secret international mission when a surprise raid puts him in a remote jungle prison where the visitors are wealthy thrill seekers and prisoners are pawns in a high stakes game of human hunting human.

John Hannah & Bai Ling join John-Paul Ly in actioner ’14 Fists’

BAFTA-nominated John Hannah and Bai Ling have boarded British martial arts actioner 14 Fists, due to begin filming in Winter 2018.

In 14 Fists a Chinese family on a British Council estate are terrorised by a local gang, until one day they take in a mysterious drifter. The film stars rising action talent Jean-Paul Ly, best known from Cambodian martial arts hit Jailbreak which won the coveted Guru prize for Best Action Feature Film at the Fantasia Film Festival 2017 and was recently released by Netflix worldwide.

Gaining a name both in front and behind the camera, Ly action coordinated new Cambodian thriller The Prey which premieres at the BFI London Film Festival this weekend. His next film Nightshooters, nominated for Best UK Feature at this year’s Raindance Film Festival, is releasing in December 2018 through UK distributor Ascendant Releasing, part of Ascendant Films.

John Hannah and Bai Ling have joined the cast of Bart Ruspoli’s martial arts project 14 Fists. Ruspoli has also written the film which is being produced by his London-based Ascendant Films.

The Prey: A New Cambodian Action Film From The Team Behind Jailbreak

News out of Cambodia is that the team behind local action flick and international hit Jailbreak are back in the saddle for a new film called The Prey.    Jimmy Henderson will get behind the camera once again to shoot a script he wrote with his Jailbreak scribe Michael Hogdson and newcomer Kai Miller. Henderson will be joined by Argentinian cinematographer Lucas Gath (Shortwave and Suspiria 2018) behind the camera. Jailbreak: Catch The Riotous New Trailer For The Upcoming Martial Arts Comedy

Witnessing the continued growth of the many talented in the stunt and screenfighting community has certainly proven rewarding. Jean-Paul Ly And Law Plancel Echo Hong Kong Action Greatness In Colin Emerson's 2015 Short, Dead End

The last three years have proven very exciting for me in covering independent action cinema. The internet is full of gems from many directors of shortfilms and once such person would be filmmaker Colin Emerson who has done at least two pieces last year that I know of with UK-based stunt and screenfighting talents, Jean-Paul Ly (Lucy, Street Fighter: Assassin's Fist) and Law Plancel (Green Street Hooligans: Underground, Ben-Hur). The two launched their own independent film group under their Jp/LP Action Design banner with the Emerson's Fall 2015 shortfilm, Dead End, the story of two friends in a deal that ultimately goes South, exposing one of them as an undercover cop.
