Rip Susanna Foster

Fangoria just learned this morning that Susanna Foster, who starred alongside Claude Rains as Christine Dubois in the 1943 Universal production of Phantom Of The Opera has died.

Foster began her career as an MGM contract player, later moving to Paramount before landing at Universal, where she scored her most famous role in Phantom at age 19. She later went on to star alongside Boris Karloff in 1944's The Climax, but abruptly quit the business in 1945. She made one final film appearance in 1992's Detour, a remake of the 1945 cult favorite.

Susanna Foster died Saturday of heart failure at the Lillian Booth Actors Home in New Jersey. She was 84.
