Emmy predictions: ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’ has a four-peat on lock
There are not that many sure things on Sunday’s Primetime Emmy Awards, but one of them will be in Best Variety Talk Series, where “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” is expected to triumph for the fourth straight year.

“Last Week Tonight” leads our predictions with 10/3 odds, while “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” is quite a few paces behind at 4/1. On its fifth nomination, “Last Week Tonight” has only lost this category once, in 2015 — the first year of the category’s existence after Best Variety Series was split into talk and sketch — to the final season of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

Counting wins for Best Variety Series, “Daily Show” holds the record with 11, while “Late Show with David Letterman” is in second with six. “Last Week” was already in third, but would extend its count to four wins over “The Colbert Report’s” two victories.
