yesterday's bad films are today's cult classics!
16 March 1999 | by yen-2See all my reviews

i ask myself why i'm getting more and more into the worst made films ever genre. i'm bored i guess! that's quite easy to say these days when films with high technology special effects and 100 million dollar plus budgets can be just as bad as eegah! beauty is in the eye of the beholder. sometimes a film or musical score is like wine that first must go through an aging period before being fully appreciated. at least bad movies have something to give. they can be held up for aspiring actors and film makers as to how not to make a film, or they can simply be enjoyed by whatever audience finds them, even if this is years later. these days we have bad films with cult followings. anything by ed wood is a great example. the man died in poverty, but he was filled with passion to create. in the face of adversity he did create something! what exactly is up to each of us to decide! i must admire ed wood for what he endured. and i do enjoy his films. like a wine it took time for his creations to come of age. i enjoy eegah and films like it for the glimpse into the past they provide. i am seeking films like this for my collection, ( 50's and 60's are my favs). you see i have plenty of time. there doesn't seem to be much in the theater or on the tv! mystery science theater 3k used such films as a base to transform them into something completely different! this is genius at its finest. you get to see a so called bad movie with a secondary dialog of hysterical wise cracks! so really who is to say what is art? some say maplethorpe and his bullwhip is! i think not! some say a crucifix encased in lucite filled with urine! i certainly think not! at least these makers of so called bad films did it on their own merit and didn't have the NEA (national endowment for the arts) to fund their films! i conclude by raising a glass of wine to the film makers who at least tried and didn't give up! thank you!
