Character error

When Paul test fires the guns at the gun club in Tucson, he is clearly careful about putting on hearing protection, yet he does not put on any eye protection, which is required in gun ranges. Ames put on eye protection and he wasn't even the one shooting at the time.

When Kersey is about to be robbed in the subway wagon, you can see a big brown shopping bag. In the next scene, when he leaves the wagon it is gone. It is the same shopping bag which is later related to on the police station.

The bloody rag Ochoa gets out of Kersey's trash can is not the same one Kersey used on his wound. Kersey's back was stained with blood from the stabbing, and that rag got soaked with blood. Yet the rag Ochoa pulls out of the garbage is not stained with blood, there's just a small spot of it.

During the funeral scene, we see a shot of Paul with his daughter and son-and-law during the services. The very next shot is of Sam and Ives with their spouses holding an umbrella. Next to the four of them on their right is an extra in a brown coat, blue pants, and white shirt. The very next shot shows the priest reading from the Bible, and here we see this same extra in the background on a totally opposite side of the group, in a different pose.

In the beginning when Mrs. Kersey and daughter in-law leave store, they walk past 2 guys carrying a couch across the side walk. In the next shot, the two women are some distance past the movers but the couch is still being carried across the sidewalk.

In the grocery store where we first see the criminals, Paul Kersey's wife and daughter are having their groceries rang up. Just behind the cashier is a male cashier dressed in a white coat and sideburns, ringing up groceries in the next isle. However, when we immediately cut to the wife and daughter leaving the store, the male cashier is gone with a different cashier in his place.

After Kersey shoots the two muggers in the subway station and is stabbed in the left shoulder there is no blood on his coat or hole in it. When we see him sit in the subway car to make his getaway with his left shoulder visible from behind the wound should be evident.

The newspaper headline, "Vigilante Kills Two in 42nd St. Subway Station," appears onscreen well before the scene where Paul Kersey actually shoots two muggers in the 42nd Street subway station, the incident referred to in the headline.

Crew or equipment visible

When Paul and son-in-law looks out the in-house window at the hospital we see them through the glass. In the reflection there's a barely visible large black square. When the camera dollies left the square follows, indicating that the square is there to disguise an all too recognizable camera silhouette.

Errors in geography

The first shooting victim is supposed to be close to Kersey's home 2 1/2 blocks from where he shops around West 75th Street. In reality the steps he descends are at West 99th Street about 1.25 miles away.

Factual errors

The gun case given Paul Kersey by Aimes Jainchill has a plaque on top that reads "To Paul, from Ames". The characters names is actually spelled "Aimes" in the credits.

In the scene where Ames Jainchill (Stuart Margolin) and Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) are at the gun club, Ames hands Paul a blackpowder pistol stating it is an '1842'. Ames is totally incorrect. Paul takes it and lifts the gun to shoot it down range, it is clearly a Remington model 1858 blackpowder pistol based on the Fordyce Beals patent of September 14, 1858 (Patent 21,748), produced by Remington Arms from 1862-1875.

Kersey at the range fires a what was called a .44 cal percussion pistol. This is a muzzle loaded pistol that uses Black Powder. When fired it produces a lot of white smoke. So what he actually fired was a .44 cartridge in a cartridge conversion kit for that pistol.

When Ochoa has a locksmith pick the lock to Kersey's apartment door, he broke the law, as he did not have a warrant. The gauze with the blood taken by Ochoa could never be used against Kersey, if they charged him in court. Any half-decent lawyer, or even a paralegal would know this.

Miscellaneous

Throughout the movie, the same People Magazine cover with Ochoa on it appears frequently. People publishes weekly, and since the film takes place over the course of several weeks (presumably), it is unlikely that the same issue would continue showing up so frequently, especially at the newsstand shown in the film.

Incorrectly regarded as goofs

When Inspector Ochoa says that the first mugger killed by Kersey was carrying a clip, he was not, as some suggest, referring to a magazine as used in an automatic pistol but to a holster clipped to his belt which held the revolver.

Revealing mistakes

When Ochoa is meeting with the District Attorney and the Commissioner in the DA office, the DA offers both of them a bowl of jelly beans to choose from. Ochoa pulls his hand from his pocket and anticipates grabbing a jelly bean before he's even shown the bowl.
