On-Set Stealth Is Key Skill of Longtime Hollywood Still Photographer Ron Jaffe
Cruising the edge of sets like a shark in shallow water, still photographer Ron P. Jaffe has spent a career using his stealthiness to capture the perfect shot. Sharing tales from times past as he sits in the serenity of his Playa del Rey home, he describes taking pictures on many of the crime movies, comedies and dramatic television series made in Hollywood during the past 30 years.

As a “stillman” — industry jargon for his profession — he has photographed everything from actors and on-set action to sets and props, and even provided the pictures for 30-foot-wide promotional billboards.

Jaffe was raised in Montgomery, Ala., after World War II. As a schoolkid, his grades were average, but he enjoyed the high school darkroom and worked on yearbook photography. He qualified for prelaw at Cal State Los Angeles in 1969 but chose to attend UCLA instead. He quit after the first day of lectures,

Kathy Griffin on Surviving Donald Trump, Confronting Leslie Moonves and Her SXSW Concert Movie
By any measure, Kathy Griffin’s comedy tour last year was a big hit. She traveled to 15 countries and played regal venues (such as the Sydney Opera House) as she dished about the devastating fallout from a 2017 photograph in which she posed with a gory mask that looked like Donald Trump’s decapitated head. The redemptive set was called, appropriately enough, “Laugh Your Head Off.” It raked in $4.4 million, and it earned her a rave review from The New York Times.

But when Griffin returned to her Bel Air home last October, she quickly realized that Hollywood wasn’t ready to forgive her. Even despite her touring success, every executive in town regarded her as an unemployable comic who’d crossed the line. She tried to shop around a comedy special, but Netflix and HBO passed. She wanted to do a reality show about what it was like to have

“It’s not all jokes tonight,” she said. “I’m also spilling piping hot tea.”

Self-proclaimed to be known for being a “starf—er” who tells “dick jokes,” her three-hour set — performed in the now-infamous dress from that Tyler Shields photo shoot — didn’t skimp on the usual brand of raucous,

Brooke Shields Reveals Why She Started Wearing Skimpy Swimsuits in Her 50s

Brooke Shields Reveals Why She Started Wearing Skimpy Swimsuits in Her 50s
Brooke Shields took a style tip from her 14-year-old daughter, Rowan, that was a real game changer.

The 52-year-old actress covers the January-February issue of Health magazine, and reveals that she recently started wearing a more scantily-clad swimsuit.

"I always wear bathing suits that cover everything, the bottoms in particular—and my older daughter said, ‘You know what? You cannot wear that bottom. It goes all the way under your butt and [makes it look] so much bigger,'" Shields recalls. "So she finds me a new bathing suit, where that whole little shelf was out, and I was horrified, but my husband said, ‘That bathing suit looks great. Rowan’s right. If you show a little bit more, it’s actually more flattering.’ So, I had to learn from her. She said, ‘Mom, face it, you’ve got a great butt.'"
