Goofs

(at around 53 mins) As Nell and the Doctor walk into the greenhouse for the first time, we see that the man-in-the-water fountain is turned on, shooting water from his mouth. After the view changes (after the lilacs line) we see/hear that the fountain is no longer on, though there is no way to explain why it turned off. See more »

Jane: You already owe two months worth of rent.
Eleanor "Nell" Vance: It's mine, and you're not taking it away.
Jane: Read the will, Nell. It states in plain language, the executor shall have the right to dispose of any and all personal property, as he shall see fit.
Eleanor "Nell" Vance: He's not even real family.
Jane: Yeah, maybe not, but clearly Mother thought Lou would be better off dealing with these unpleasant details than you.

Alternate Versions

There are some quick shots in the Making Of that actually didn't appear in the final cut. For example, when Theo and Nell wandered around the house, they found the corridor to the nursery room, to which Nell looks scared, and Theo rather indifferent. Also, in the scene where Luke is killed, Theo's reaction to it is longer. See more »

Great special effects...but not at all scary
30 April 2000 | by Meredith-7See all my reviews

I hadn't heard anything particularly good about this film, but I thought I would see it for myself. I was disappointed to a certain extent- because it just was not at all scary. it looked like it might be, and the haunting of Hill House certainly is a very creepy novel- but this film is just special effects wizardry and thats about all. It has a great cast, particularly Taylor, Neeson and Zeta-Jones, but they really do play second fiddle to the special effects. The set design really is magnificent, but the story is fairly average and the characters are unfortunately a little underdeveloped. By the end I was bit bored with the 'creepy house', because it just was not 'creepy' enough. Some of the lines were so laughable it could have been mistaken for a comedy. Visually stunning for a while, but when you run out of things to look at- there is nothing else of interest.
