Storyline

Plumber brothers Mario and Luigi from Brooklyn have just arrived in an outlandish realm called the Mushroom Kingdom. It was ruled by Princess Toadstool and her faithful Mushroom people. But one day, evil cast a shadow over the land and the evil King Bowser Koopa emerged with his army of Goombas, Spinies, Flying Koopas, and other malignant creatures. King Koopa abducted Princess Toadstool and trapped her faithful Mushroom People in seven of his castles. So Mario and Luigi must intrepid deep and hazardous waters, jump from tree to tree (don't look down!), and visually examine their steps in the dark evil castles filled with fire balls and lava pits and must utilize their magic powers to subjugate the evil King Koopa and rescue the Princess. Trivia

Shigeru Miyamoto had originally wanted to give Mario a dinosaur to ride on for the game, unfortunately the hardware limitations of the NES wouldn't allow for it. He was able to finally fulfill his wish in Super Mario World, which ran on the far more powerful Super NES, and named the dinosaur Yoshi. See more »

Alternate Versions

Was rereleased to the Game Boy Color in 1999 in the USA, (2000 in Japan), as Super Mario DX. It was the same game, but fetured a Yoshi, and a red coin challenge. It also had an option to play as Luigi, and a map of the Mushroom Kingdom. See more »

The King of All Video Games
15 August 2001 | by Vince-5See all my reviews

Super Mario Bros. is a game I remember very fondly. It's the one that started the whole home-video-game mania, and perhaps it is best remembered for this historical aspect. But it has such a special place in my heart for a much simpler reason: It was SO MUCH FUN! Flying turtles, angry mushrooms, flashing question marks, piranha plants, twirling fireball sticks, fire flowers...and there are days when I can't get the soundtrack out of my head! The game is quite tricky in places (I've never beaten it myself, though I watched as someone else did--I was curious as to what the actual Princess looked like! I was much better at its equally delightful partner, Duck Hunt), but it always retained that sense of challenge, excitement, and fantastic charm. My mother even became addicted to it!

Unfortunately, the video game world moves very fast and tends to forget previous projects. When a new, slicker system comes out, the older model is promptly deleted--not just pushed to the background, but actually DELETED, so that you can't find a new cartridge or machine when your old one wears out and starts flashing blue on the TV screen. I think it's very sad that Nintendo and other companies forget the value of basic block graphics, simple controls, and a great game. Still, Mario and Luigi have earned their place in history. No matter what comes and goes, they will always be the ultimate video game icons.
