Peter Davison revealed in an interview that the series had no rehearsal period, the actors just turned up having learned their lines, the scenes were blocked and they just did it. Davison said "the end result was just as good, if not better" than All Creatures Great and Small (1978), which had been heavily rehearsed before going into the studio.
