Loonies is a touching comedy about five psychiatric patients who are forced to exchange their familiar surroundings for an old-fashioned, impersonal institution. Partly because of the severe regime of a dreadful nurse, the five decide to escape from their new home and go back to the old one under their own steam. After a drastic confrontation with the 'normal' outside world that results in fighting and panic, the group breaks up. Each of the five patients realise their dreams individually, but ultimately they decide to choose for each other and the familiarity of their own place. Loonies is a film with light-hearted and cheeky humour that, in a moving way, takes us into the pleasantly disturbed world of five somewhat romanticised psychiatric patients. Written by Anonymous

Did You Know?

Composer Theo Nijland claimed that he was inspired by certain French and Italian films from his youth, which shared similarities in the storytelling. He believed these films starred Louis de Funès lots of times. He could not remember the music from those films, so basically based his score on music he had never heard before with a happy, illustrative and fast paced character to it. See more »

I just love this film!
24 May 2003 | by pprovoostSee all my reviews

It's great, it's funny, it's emotional, it has a good plot, it has everything a family-fun-film must have!! The only thing is: it is in Dutch, but I am Dutch, so that's no problem for me, but for the rest of the world. This film should be subtitled for the rest of the world, so the rest of the world can laugh!!
