Primer Director Shane Carruth Will Quit Filmmaking After Directing One Last Movie
If you are a fan of mind-bending cinema, a title you might be familiar with is the 2004 science-fiction movie Primer, widely regarded as one of the best movies the genre has to offer. The time travel feature signaled the arrival of a strong new voice in cinema, Shane Carruth, who wrote, directed, edited and scored the film along with acting in it. But despite only making one other movie since Primer, 2013's Upstream Color, Carruth is done with Hollywood after his next project releases.

"I've got one last project in front of me. I shouldn't say anything about it. I'm still defining the edges. But that is it for me. I'm not going to say I'm doing a project and then hope Paramount gives me a deal or whatever the hell. I'm not doing that anymore. There's a thousand other things I'm interested in doing in life that I don't talk about,

Frightfest Spotlight: Director Ryan Spindell Talks ‘The Mortuary Collection’
From this Thursday evening until Saturday night the Gff ventures into the darker side of cinema with its annual Arrow Video Frightfest takeover. Over the course of the two and a half days, the event will host a total of thirteen movies that cover all facets of genre cinema. One such film is The Mortuary Collection. Screening on Friday 6th March at 10:50 Pm, the film is the first time feature from writer-director Ryan Spindell.

Despite being his first feature-length film, Spindell has been steadily working in the world of short films for the last few years. In fact, one of his shorts, The Babysitter Murders, forms part of The Mortuary Collection which in itself is a portmanteau anthology. The film begins in a funeral home, the perfect setting for hearing some scary stories, and sees Clancy Brown’s Montgomery Dark recount some rather disturbing tales to a prospective co-worker.

Sonic the Hedgehog Review

Sonic the Hedgehog runs so very fast, but he cannot escape the feeling we've seen this all before and it wasn't that great then.

When watching Sonic the Hedgehog, it is easy to feel like you’ve time warped back to a different era—but not the 1990s. At least not fully. While the film thrives on a wave of nostalgia that any ‘90s kid with shadows of Sega Genesis glory in their memory banks can recognize, in truth the movie more closely resembles a family film from the 2000s. For here is a perfectly adequate effort that refuses to rock the boat or even leave the bay. It instead sits firmly on the dock, relying on banal pop culture gags, a tacky premise about beloved pop culture icons entering suburbia via interdimensional portals, and maybe the stray fart joke. They even have a major comedian from

Netflix Added A Ton Of Great Horror Movies Today For 2020

New year, and a host of new Netflix additions to match.

While subscribers are currently mourning the loss of Friends – after going dark today, January 1st, the beloved sitcom won’t be available until HBO Max arrives in May – Netflix has today rolled out a bevy of fresh TV shows and movies to keep us entertained, including some truly unmissable horror properties.

From Event Horizon to Cloverfield, The Amityville Horror to the Tremors franchise, Netflix’s horror category has officially been restocked. There’s plenty to choose from, too, including the 2002 rendition of The Ring, which only makes us long for a competent retelling of the Japanese horror legend to right the wrongs of Rings (2017). At least we have the upcoming Grudge reboot to look forward to on Friday (or January 24th if you happen to be located in the United Kingdom).

Per What’s on Netflix, here’s the comprehensive list of new additions,

Lee Mendelson, Producer of ‘Peanuts’ and ‘Garfield’ TV Specials, Dies at 86
Lee Mendelson, who produced several “Peanuts” and “Garfield” television specials, died at his home in Hillsborough, Calif. on Christmas Day after a battle with lung cancer, according to Palo Alto’s Daily Post.

Mendelson is also known for writing the lyrics to “Christmastime Is Here” from the 1965 TV special “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Lee Mendelson, Prolific Producer of ‘Peanuts’ and ‘Garfield’ TV Specials, Dies at 86
Lee Mendelson, the producer behind more than 50 animated TV specials featuring Charlie Brown and the “Peanuts” gang, died on Christmas Day at his home in Hillsborough, Calif., after a long battle with cancer. He was 86.

Mendelson also wrote the lyrics to “Christmas Time Is Here,” a song featured in “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” the 1965 special that turned “Peanuts” into a TV staple. “Charlie Brown Christmas” brought Mendelson the first of his 12 Emmys. The last came in 2015 for “It’s Your 50th Christmas, Charlie Brown.” Mendelson’s work with animator Lee Melendez also brought him four Peabody Awards, an Oscar nomination and two Grammy noms.

A lifelong fan of jazz, Mendelson had the inspiration to hire musician Vince Guaraldi to create original music for “Charlie Brown Christmas,” a touch that helped make the specials stand out with viewers young and old. Over the years Mendelson worked with other notable musicians such as Dave Brubeck,

Now That It’s Fixed, Should We Support the ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Movie?

When it first debuted earlier this year, the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog was justly meant with derision by the world at large. Featuring a reworked version of Gangster’s Paradise and a horrific CG design for its main character, the movie as-advertised looked to have little to nothing to do with the 16-bit platformer that inspired it in the first place and everything to do with the run of terrible “CGI pet” movies that have flooded movie theaters in recent years. You know the kinds of movies that I’m talking about: movies like Garfield (2004), Alvin and the Chipmunks

Does ‘Zombieland: Double Tap’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?

  • The Wrap
Does ‘Zombieland: Double Tap’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?
It’s pretty rare for any movie series to get its first sequel a decade after the original movie. But “Zombieland: Double Tap” has done exactly that, hitting theaters a full ten years after “Zombieland.”

That lengthy gap makes what is now the “Zombieland” franchise in a weird place for viewers. Did Sony make a new one because they plan on making more? Or is this more of a fun little one-off reunion movie? With these things carrying fairly small budgets, Sony is probably going to keep its options open, in a “we’ll see how this plays out” kind of way.

That being said, now that “Zombieland: Double Tap” has created a franchise, viewers are going to understandably wonder if the film follows in the footsteps of pretty much every other franchise movie the past few years by including a mid- or post-credits scene that teases future entries.

The answer is yes,

Viacom to Acquire ‘Garfield’ Rights for Nickelodeon Series

  • The Wrap
Viacom is set to acquire the rights to “Garfield” and the U.S. Acres franchise in order to give the beloved lasagna-eating cat his own Nickelodeon series.

As soon as the acquisition is complete, which the network expects will be within a few weeks, Nickelodeon has plans to develop the new “Garfield” animated series. Don’t worry — the acquisition will not affect the syndicated comic strip, which creator Jim Davis will continue to produce.

“I’ve always tried to make people laugh with humor that is classic and appealing to both kids and adults. I’m delighted that Garfield is going to be placed in the capable hands of the folks at Nick,” Davis said. “They know how to entertain and will be great stewards for the franchise. I am also excited to continue to do the thing that gets me out of bed every morning… the comic strip!”

Viacom Acquires Comic-Strip Cat Garfield

  • Variety
Garfield, the lasagna-loving comic-strip feline, has a new owner.

The lazy cat has for more than 40 years been the property of owner Jon Arbuckle, a socially awkward fellow who must indulge his pet’s debilitating laziness and constant sarcasm. But in weeks to come, the character will become one more element in Viacom’s vast Nickelodeon portfolio of intellectual property, taking his place alongside SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora The Explorer and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Viacom has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Paws, Inc., the entity that holds all global intellectual property rights to both “Garfield” as well as “U.S. Acres,” another Davis creation, including corresponding rights related to content, consumer products, and location-based experiences. The acquisition is expected to close in the upcoming weeks. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the character is said to generate millions of dollars a year in merchandise alone.
