In the opening gambit, Mac dresses down to a bath-towel to blend in with a Basque extremist group which holds captive a female scientist in the Pyrenees, then makes blow up their open air-shower as a diversion before they flee over a wild mountain stream. In the main story, Mac visits a biologist in Brazilian Amazonia, where an unknown phenomenon causes all kinds of animals to flee massively. Joining the head-strong plantation founder Lucien Trumbo, who employs whole villages of native Indians and created his own self-sufficient little world carved out of the huge forest, they soon find the natural force at work is the unexplained rare awakening of the marabunta, massed colonies of billions of soldier ants who form armies miles wide and long, unstoppable and capable of devouring anything, devastating the whole landscape from grass and grasshoppers to cattle and towering trees. Trumbo, his loyal local lieutenant Luis and Mac try every defense he can think up, from flooding irrigation ... Written by KGF Vissers

Did You Know?

This episode uses footage from The Naked Jungle (1954). The footage of Christopher Leiningen (Charlton Heston) flooding the ants was used. See more »

When MacGyver, Alden and Trumbo discover the valley overrun by ants, Alden takes a couple of close-up shots of the ants with his camera. There is no (regular) camera/lens in existence that can get this close to something so far away, and certainly not the one he's using. See more »

MacGyver: [voice-over narration] Up in the Pyrenees, there's about as pretty a patch of country as you could ever hope to see. Peaceful forests, raging rivers, and Basque mountain men who've been feuding with France or Spain for as long as anyone can remember. Now and then, an American tourist gets caught in the middle of one of these private wars and that's when I usually get a call. When somebody's in trouble and needs some rescuing.

One of my favorite episodes!!
9 February 2014 | by chmielewskijamie5See all my reviews

One other person has complained about this episode being poorly done? If you compare it to 2008 standards with all the money and CGI that shows have now it does seem a little on the dull side. This show aired in 1985 almost 30 years ago, in a time when TV didn't have to kind of budgets they have now, another thing is people were not use to seeing really nasty death scenes especially on network TV. With all of that said I can remember watching this episode as a child and being introduced to the real threat that insects could cause. If this show was remade today I am sure that lots of reel good computer ants could be seen destroying lots of stuff and the danger could be more threatening. Considering this was only the 6th episode in a brand new show, that no one could know if the show would last more than a season, I think its a gem for the time and the production value for MacGyver only got better as the years went on. So in closing to the only other reviewer "what did you expect from TV in 1985?"
