Ne'er-do-well slacker Pvt. Hap Johnson (Robert Blake) deserts the cavalry. He's a "winter soldier," one who joins the Army in winter to enjoy the warm barracks, and then deserts when the weather improves. He makes his way to Favor's cattle drive and soon takes off upon hearing that a father and daughter, who have money from the sale of their farm, are traveling alone by wagon, having just left the drovers' camp. Soon thereafter, an Army detail arrives looking for the deserter, and they discover the Army blanket and Army horse Johnson left behind in exchange for inconspicuous ones. Favor is arrested and held for buying stolen Army items. And the drovers learn that the father and daughter duo are heading towards renegade Indians. So Rowdy has a double reason for pursing the duo: (1) to capture Johnson and prove Favor's innocence; and (2) to save the duo from the Indian danger. Written by chipe

Did You Know?

Several soldiers, along with Favor, Hey Soos, and Quince, ride all night to save Rowdy and the Kurtzes from an Indian attack. When they catch up to the party just in time to thwart the attack, all of them pursue the Indians. None of them stop to check whether Rowdy and the Kurtzes are all right. Of course, had they done so, the deserter Johnson wouldn't have had time for a lengthy goodbye - and a clean getaway. See more »

Awful letdown
10 June 2017 | by bkoganbingSee all my reviews

This one was definitely not one of the better Rawhide episodes ever done. The guest star is Robert Blake who plays someone who was known as a winter soldier. One might enlist in the US Cavalry to spend the rough western winters in a nice warm army barracks with three hots and a cot and then desert with the first coming of spring. That's what Blake has done and he has a most determined officer in Liam Sullivan looking to bring him back.

There are hints that Blake is a good deal more than a slacker and it was one awful letdown when he proves different. It was not what I was expecting and I can't recommend this story for Rawhide's viewers.
