Storyline

After a meteor wipes out the majority of forces from the nations of Uhra and Khent, Kaim joins Seth and Jansen to investigate the Grand Staff at the behest of the council of Uhra. At the Staff, the three are captured by hostile scouts who take them to Numara, where they meet with Queen Ming, another immortal who has lost her memory. The queen allows the group to go free in Numara, where Kaim meets Cooke and Mack, his grandchildren, who join the group after the death of their mother. News eventually arrives in Numara that Gongora has encouraged Tolten to reestablish the monarchy in Uhra and prepare for war. The general of Numara, Kakanas, uses the opportunity to usurp control of the country from Ming, forcing her to flee with Kaim and others as enemies of the state. The group travels towards the nation of Gohtza, hoping to seek help from its King. On the way, Sarah Sisulart, Kaim's wife, joins the party after she is recovered from the Old Sorceress Mansion.

I attempted to play through this game twice and I couldn't get pat the first hour on either time
1 February 2016 | by WakenPayneSee all my reviews

I have to say I only completed about an hour of this extremely vast game (depending on how you play) and I've done this twice because it seems to me that there is no way to get through the game without grinding on an OCD level. I wouldn't be writing this or giving up if the story and characters were the least bit interesting or done well enough to get me to like them.

The plot is that Kaim is an immortal warrior in a world where magic is a new groundbreaking discovery that people are somewhat weary of the consequences of using it (such as being near an immortal increasing chances of death). A meteor strike happens during battle and he loses his memory. He along with the help of fellow immortals go around eventually stopping some world destroying thing that I haven't played yet.

So the plot is basic but by GOD Kaim is annoying. He doesn't do things annoying but his whole character is basically an emo persona, his line deliveries are so one-dimensional (although to be fair, I don't think these would sound better in Japanese). He is a huge stick in the mud to this game, we don't want to play as someone like this and when he loses his memory this does not stop at all throughout. I only know of Seth and Jed. Jed is also annoying in the "Mesa comic relief!" way, who is the only one who has healing spells to use, either way don't listen to him, just use his magic in combat. Seth is the closest thing to being likable, I don't know what the fascination is with some games having the biggest depressive stick in the mud for heroes but why wasn't this game about Seth? I actually like her.

Oh and there's the combat. For a while you think you've gotten the hang of it if you haven't played Final Fantasy before. Then a boss comes, my biggest pet peeve with it aside from it performing moves that wipe out half your party in one hit is that you don't know if what you're doing is right or not. There are numbers saying how much damage is being inflicted but there never seems to be any sign that you're hurting it or how much like a life bar.

So what's good here? Well, while it's distinctly JRPG, I like the art style - the voice acting is not TOO bad and it almost looks like it could be a decent game for anyone with the time or patience to attempt it. In the game you find short written segments on Kaim's story with people prior to the events of the game and it actually works quite well, in fact I was way more invested in getting them then I was finishing the game because they were written with actual drama in it or failing that gives us insight into culture that the game refuses to explain or show otherwise.

So... It's not great. There are good things. The combat is pretty good despite it's extremely steep difficulty curb at the first boss, the story seemed interesting enough but Kaim as a character is so goddamn redundantly bad along with Jed. I wouldn't suggest playing it unless you're extremely into the Final Fantasy style RPG.
