New ‘Antebellum’ Images Tease a Time-Shifting Nightmare with Janelle Monáe

Last night at the Oscars, Janelle Monáe opened up the ceremony with a delightful, time-hopping journey through Mr. Rogers, her own brand of futurist funk, and the old-fashioned glamor of Hollywood mixed with the contemporary film classics of 2019. In the upcoming 2020 horror film Antebellum, starring Monáe, she also seems to be colliding through different time periods simultaneously. But based on these newly released pictures, they seem less "fun" and more "terrifyingly interrogating the traumas of America." Beyond Monáe, Antebellum also stars Kiersey Clemons, Gabourey Sidibe, Jena Malone, Jack Huston, Eric Lange, Tongayi Chirisa, …

Lord of the Rings TV Series Casts Game of Thrones’ Robert Aramayo for Lead Role

Joseph Baxter Jan 7, 2020

The recently vacated lead role on Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series has gone to Game of Thrones actor Robert Aramayo.

While Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings television series seems to be tapping into the momentum of quasi-feudal themes left behind by Game of Thrones, it may have just cemented such a notion with the casting of series alumnus Robert Aramayo for a lead role.

An English actor, Aramayo – best known for his 2016-2017 Game of Thrones flashback-scenes stint as a young version of Ned Stark (Sean Bean’s ill-fated Season 1 protagonist) – will play a lead role in The Lord of the Rings previously filled by the recently-departed Will Poulter, as Deadline reports. While details on his character are still sparse, the role is said to be heroic, tentatively referred to as “Beldor.”

Aramayo recently appeared on a second season episode of Netflix’s Mindhunter,

‘The Lord Of the Rings’: Robert Aramayo To Star In Amazon TV Series

‘The Lord Of the Rings’: Robert Aramayo To Star In Amazon TV Series
Exclusive: Game of Thrones alum Robert Aramayo has been tapped for the lead in Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV series, I have learned. He replaces Will Poulter, who had been in negotiations for the young hero role, referred to as Beldor, until he recently exited the project due to scheduling conflicts. Reps for Amazon and Aramayo declined comment.

Amazon in November moved ahead with an early Season 2 renewal for the sprawling adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy novels. In conjunction with that renewal, the series will be going on a 4-5-month hiatus after filming the first two episodes from Season 1 to map out and write the bulk of the scripts for Season 2.

Set in Middle Earth, the Lotr TV series will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The show’s cast, which has yet to be confirmed by Amazon,

Every Studio Film Directed by Filmmakers of Color Coming Out in 2020 and 2021

  • Indiewire
Every Studio Film Directed by Filmmakers of Color Coming Out in 2020 and 2021
2018 was a watershed moment for diversity in Hollywood. High-profile studio films directed by filmmakers of color made history: Ava DuVernay became the first black woman to direct a film that grossed over $100 million with “A Wrinkle in Time”; “Crazy Rich Asians” was a huge hit, grossing over $238 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy in a decade; and “Black Panther,” the most expensive Marvel movie led by a black superhero, grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, shattering the belief that black films don’t sell overseas.

2019, however, yielded less promising results. According to IndieWire’s own research, out of the top 100 movies of 2019, the number directed by filmmakers of color fell from 26 percent in 2018 to 18 percent in 2019. White men still account for over 80 percent of film directors at the studio level, even though they make up only a third of the U.S. population. Of the 1,200 highest-grossing films of the last decade,

Antebellum Trailer Brings Racial Horror to Time Travel Fantasy

David Crow Nov 21, 2019

The first teaser of new horror movie Antebellum brings a chilling concept about being sent back to the American South before the Civil War.

You’ve seen this tale before: a man or woman is accidentally transported through time and has a grand adventure in the past that solves all their problems. That’s been a yarn at least as old as Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and persists still on Outlander with every new season. Yet these protagonists tend to share a common trait: they can fit into the past. But what if they could not? Or worse still, what if they could, but only in a specific, horrifying role? Antebellum seems to be going there as past and future merge—and that past is the slave-based economy of the American South.

In what appears to be an electrifying idea for a horror movie,

Antebellum Trailer: Janelle Monae Can't Be Saved in Mysterious Horror Movie

  • MovieWeb
Surprise! Award-winning actress and musician Janelle Monae is starring in a horror movie, and we have the trailer to prove it. Lionsgate surprised just about everyone today when they revealed a trailer for a mysterious new movie called Antebellum. The high-concept horror flick comes with a stacked cast, and was produced by the people behind Get Out and Us, which only adds to the intrigue. Not to mention that this is one heck of a teaser.

The teaser itself is a little tough to get a grip on, as it's not cleanly laying out the story. We start out with audio of a 911 call, which is played over a woman running through a field being chased by men on horseback, which looks to be taking place in the American South back during the days before the Civil War. Janelle Monae looks on in silent surprise as this unfolds in front of her.

What Is ‘Antebellum’? Mysterious Janelle Monáe Horror Movie Debuts Trailer
Janelle Monáe has quickly gone from celebrated avant-garde R&b artist to a powerful screen actress ever since her supporting role in 2016’s “Moonlight.” She’s since starred in “Hidden Figures,” “Welcome to Marwen,” and “Harriet,” along with lending her voice to “UglyDolls” and “Lady and the Tramp.” She will finally take the lead next year with the mysterious horror movie “Antebellum.” Check out the seriously creepy first trailer below.

Here’s the movie’s logline: “Successful author Veronica (Monáe) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality and must uncover the mind-bending mystery before it’s too late.” Given the Southern Gothic atmosphere of the trailer, and the fact that the title refers to the Civil War era, it’s safe to say this is going to be a social thriller in the vein of “Get Out” and “Us” — whose producer Sean McKittrick also produced “Antebellum.” Yet there’s also
