Cool, organic documentary film follows a day in the life of Houston, America's 4th largest city. Light on dialog and narration, the story is told through strong cinematography, editorial and a few words from famous Houstonians. The film is one of a series of city-based documentary films created by commercial director W. Ross Wells and producer/writer Merideth Melville of Zenfilm. Cinematographers Raul Casares and Wayne Forster both made artistic contributions to the film. One Day in Houston features cameo appearances by George Forman, Lauren Anderson, Chloe Dao, Yolanda Adams and Johnny Nash to name a few. Musical highlights feature jazz violinist Michael Ward and a performance by Beetle at Houston's famous Continental Club. One Day in Houston was commissioned by the Greater Houston Convention and Visitor's Bureau and funded in part by a grant from Continental Airlines. Written by W. Ross Wells

Houston ain't whatcha think!
13 June 2007 | by mike-4550See all my reviews

When I hear the name of the city, old pictures play in my head. Traffic, humidity, oily ship channels, and astronauts. I'm not alone in that. I've had people turn up their noses when I say I'm headed for Houston on business. I guess that's why this little film was made. Houston's image has been on the shady side of the street for a long time. This short film, "One Day in Houston", kicks it all loose. Houston is transformed and you can believe your eyes. It's all real. The images in this piece are fabulous. The scope of Houston's modern architecture is breathtaking. Some shots look like they're from some future city. The arts, the entertainment, the commerce, the food, the diversity of taste, the diversity of style, it's all here. "One Day in Houston" is telling you that Houston is not what you think. It paints a picture of a sophisticated city that is down home. A comfortable, but exciting place where you can have a little New York if you're in the mood. This film sells the experience. I realize more than ever that Houston needs a major image overhaul. "One Day in Houston" is a good start. Eventually the world will know what it's missing. Watch it.
