Storyline
Journalist Helen Thomas has covered nine presidents and her venerable career has earned her the moniker 'The First Lady of the Press.' Directed by award-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy, this documentary profiles the iconic journalist who has held a front-row seat at White House press conferences for more than 60 years. In her 80s and as sharp as ever, Thomas sits down for a one-on-one interview in which she reflects on her career, the distinct personalities and foibles of the presidents she's covered, as well as some of the scandals that have rocked the White House over the years.

Helen Thomas is an interesting subject. She's been a reporter and had access to all nine US presidents from Kennedy to W. I would like to see a real movie about this unique woman. However, this short documentary doesn't really do the subject justice. While it is an interesting chat, nothing is really delved into too deeply (including W's hostility to the media, alluded to by the previous commenter). It didn't seem to take a chronological look at her life and work, nor did it seem to group things together into themes. It was just sort of random, to me. I would have liked to know in more detail things like: What really motivated Helen to get into reporting? What happened to her colleagues from her school, and what do they have to say about her? What happened in her husband's career after they got married? What was Helen's relationship to the rest of the media, when they were not asking the necessary questions? What does she see in the future of reporting on the president?
