Free Guy Trailer Has Ryan Reynolds Trapped in a Wild Video Game

  • MovieWeb
20th Century Fox has revealed the first trailer for Free Guy. This is the latest from director Shawn Levy who has partnered with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds for his latest big screen effort. In this case, Levy is tackling a video game movie, but not one based on a real video game. Instead, Reynolds is playing a character in a fictional video game, but with something of a Truman Show twist. After a couple of teasers that didn't contain any actual footage, the studio has finally provided us with our first real look at the movie.

As teased in yesterday's Free Guy infomercial, the story centers on a bank teller (Ryan Reynolds) who is settled into the simple routine that is his life. However, things are shaken up in a big way when he discovers he's simply an Npc, a non-playable character in a massive, violent open world video game.

Would be fun to make movie out of 'Stranger Things': Shawn Levy

"Stranger Things" is more than just a supernatural thriller. It has become a pop culture phenomenon over the years. Now, director-producer Shawn Levy wants to take the nostalgia-inducing blend of horror and thrill to the big screen. But he is not in a hurry.

Back in 2016, The Duffer Brothers brought the science-fiction horror drama alive, with a bonanza of nostalgic 1970s and 1980s references. The third season of the Netflix show went live earlier this month.

"Perhaps it would be fun to make a movie out of 'Stranger Things' one day, but we are in no rush as essentially Netflix is allowing to make mini movies with every episode," he said in an email interview.

"For me, the thrilling part of Season 3 is that it truly feels like a movie. The scope of the action and spectacle, while still keeping the emotional depth of each character, is highly cinematic,

How Legends Called an Emergency Meeting to Punch Up Nate and Zari's Hot Date... With Adventure

It took a first-of-its-kind emergency for The CW’s Legends of Tomorrow to send Nate and Zari on a proper first date — with over-the-top Nazis.

The first episode of May Sweeps — titled “Egg MacGuffin” and airing Monday at 8/7c — “is sort of the culmination of the Nate and Zari romance that we’ve been teasing for quite a while now,” showrunner Phil Klemmer shares.

“The preceding episode was all about whether Zari (played by Tala Ashe) would text Nate (Nick Zano), and what she would text him, which is the most frivolous plotline we’ve ever had in the history of the show,

Joel McHale Joins Psych: The Movie 2 With Jimmi Simpson Also Set to Return

In a fun Instagram post from Psych star Timothy Omundson, we found out that Joel McHale is joining the cast of Psych: The Movie 2. We don’t have any character details yet for McHale’s role, but have the description that he’s a mysterious character from Lassie’s past. Not only that, but Jimmi Simpson tweeted a video confirming that he is returning to the sequel and reprising his role as Mary Lightly.

The original series follows “fake psychic Shawn Spencer, played by James Roday (A Million Little Things), and Burton ‘Gus’ Guster, played by Dulé Hill (Suits), as best friend/crime-solving partners. The show had an immense following, with its eight series run and its first movie that followed, so it’s pretty fun that fans are getting this second follow up.

I hate to admit that I still haven’t watched the series. It’s on my list!

Redbox Has An April Fools’ Laugh, Announcing Door-To-Door Drone Service

Redbox is getting into the April Fools’ Day spirit, announcing a spoof service called Redbox Drops, which, if it actually existed, would use drones to fly entire kiosks to customers’ doorsteps (see the goofy photo illustration above).

The stunt is a promotion for the company’s transactional streaming offering, Redbox On Demand, and comes with a 25% coupon good for rentals today. Instead of subscribing, Redbox On Demand customers pay as they go for each movie or TV title they stream.

In recent months, the rental kiosk operator has been working to assert its place in the entertainment ecosystem despite some significant headwinds, mainly the secular decline in physical media revenue. According to annual figures from the Digital Entertainment Group, total rentals in 2018 declined 13% to $420.4 million, with kiosk rentals (the bulk of which are via Redbox) dipping 8.5% to $263.6 million. The picture is brighter when VOD is factored in, with total rentals including VOD rising 3% to $937.4 million,

Monster Problems Teams Ariana Greenblatt with Michael Rooker and Dylan O'Brien

Monster Problems Teams Ariana Greenblatt with Michael Rooker and Dylan O'Brien
Mary Poppins himself Michael Rooker and Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) will be teaming up soon for the post-apocalyptic monster movie Monster Problems. If those two bits of casting news weren't enough to pique your interest in the upcoming film, maybe today's addition will. Today we have word that young Gamora actress Ariana Greenblatt is joining in on the fun as well. Greenblatt will be playing a character by the name of Minnow in the Paramount Players motion picture.

Monster Problems is a coming of age movie about a young man living in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by monsters. Michael Rooker will play Clyde, an expert hunter who teaches Joel Dawson (O'Brien) how to survive the Monster Apocalypse. No word on how Greenblatt's Minnow fits into the story at this time. That said, I've joked that this movie is shaping up to be Zombieland... With Monsters! and if that's true,

‘Instant Family’ Review: The Best Mark Wahlberg Movie in a Very Long Time

‘Instant Family’ Review: The Best Mark Wahlberg Movie in a Very Long Time
From “Lone Survivor” and “Deepwater Horizon,” to “Patriot’s Day” and “The Perfect Storm,” Mark Wahlberg devoted the last decade of his career to a hoo-rah brand of heroic nonfiction (it’s always tempting to trace this career pivot back to the actor’s useless claim that he could have stopped the hijackers on 9/11). But the 47-year-old star, ever the savvy businessman, has also hit upon a lucrative side hustle: blockbuster comedies. Low-key funny in earlier films like “Date Night” and “I Heart Huckabees,” Wahlberg parlayed that aspect of his persona into mega-hits like “Ted,” “Ted 2,” “Daddy’s Home,” and — wait for it — “Daddy’s Home 2”.

In hindsight, it was a matter of time before the actor decided to mesh his two favorite modes into a single movie: A broad comedy about Mark Wahlberg rescuing people from a real-life hardship. Yikes. While that prospect sounds terrifying on paper, not

Ryan Reynolds to Star in Shawn Levy Action Comedy Free Guy

Joseph Baxter Sep 28, 2018

Free Guy will see Ryan Reynolds headline an action-comedy helmed by Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has no shortage of projects, thanks to his acclaimed, financially fulfilling comeback as Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth. Interestingly, the latest addition to Reynolds’s backlog, a comedy called Free Guy, will purportedly utilize the artificial-world trope of The Truman Show with a dash of tonal dust from the Grand Theft Auto games.

Ryan Reynolds is set to headline 20th Century Fox comedic actioner Free Guy, as trades report. Reynolds will play a bank teller living a humdrum routine life, only to learn that he is, in actuality, a background character in a violent open world video game; a world that is somehow in jeopardy and can only be saved by him.

Free Guy will be directed by Shawn Levy, a longtime producer, who

Watch Father John Misty’s Surreal Animated Video for ‘Date Night’
Over the weekend Father John Misty dropped a new animated video for “Date Night,” the latest song form the singer-songwriter’s album “God’s Favorite Customer,” which was released in June.

The clip, which was directed by artist and fellow Sub Pop musician Chad VanGaalen, is some kind of commentary on contemporary dating, with surreal characters looking at dating apps and a crystal ball that gives recommendations. Misty himself makes a cameo toward the end of the video — in animated form, of course, riding on a winged piano while holding a cocktail.

Misty (aka Josh Tillman) is currently on a North American tour, with dates at San Francisco’s Outside Lands and the Austin City Limits Festival.

In his review of the Los Angeles show, Variety’s Chris Willman wrote: “The songs he performed from ‘God’s Favorite Customer’ — (very) arguably his best effort to date — localize his despondency, which

Father John Misty has shared his new animated video for “Date Night,” the latest single off the singer-songwriter’s latest LP God’s Favorite Customer.

The video, directed by artist and Sub Pop musician Chad VanGaalen, doubles as a psychedelic spin on modern dating with disfigured superheroes scrolling through dating apps and a crystal ball serving up partner recommendations.

A cartoon version of the singer born Josh Tillman appears in the video’s closing moments holding a martini while riding atop a bat-winged piano.

Album Review: Father John Misty’s ‘God’s Favorite Customer’
Leonard Cohen is gone, so there’s not much competition: Father John Misty is rock’s most fabulous miserabilist. However much of a nihilistic joker he might have come off on last year’s polarizingly philosophical “Pure Comedy,” he wasn’t kidding around when he promised that its rapid-fire follow-up, “God’s Favorite Customer,” would be “a heartbreak album.” Not that Misty had been pain-avoidant before, but the previous record’s reams of wry intellectualizing made him feel like a guy who’d confined the crisis to his head. Here, he’s moved deep into his chest cavity — and it sounds like an uncomfortable place to live, if a rewarding Airbnb stopover for the rest of us.

On that last epic think piece of an album, the credits might have read: “Music by Elton John; lyrics by Kierkegaard.” One of the pleasures of “God’s Favorite Customer” is that it

Tina Fey’s 11 Best Characters From ‘SNL’ and Beyond, Ranked From Funny to Liz Lemon (Photos)

Tina Fey’s 11 Best Characters From ‘SNL’ and Beyond, Ranked From Funny to Liz Lemon (Photos)
“SNL” alumna Tina Fey has come a long way since her days on the sketch comedy show. Since her turn as an anchor of Weekend Update and head writer of the show, she’s gone on to star in movies and create one of the best comedy TV shows ever in “30 Rock.” In honor of Fey’s return to “SNL” to host the Season 43 finale this week, here are 11 of Tina Fey’s best characters, ranked from the least hilarious to the most: Liz Lemon of “30 Rock.”

11. Queef Latina — “SNL”

When Fey returned to “SNL” as host in 2013, she used her monologue to remind fans of her least-remembered recurring characters. They were, of course, all made-up characters that had never existed, but even the promo materials for some of them were amazing. Fey and “SNL” suggested the movie spin-off for her fake character “Queef Latina,” dubbed “Queef Latina Ruins Christmas,

Hollywood Takes Slap Shot On ‘The Trashers’, About Most Penalized Team In Hockey History And 17 Year-Old President

Exclusive: Yellow Bear Films has acquired a script from Adam Perlman (Billions) based on the Sports Illustrated article “This Hockey Mogul Was 17. Got a Problem With That?” which was reported by Jon Wertheim.

The project is being produced by Tom McNulty (Date Night) through his MC² banner. No director is attached yet. It’s being described as Slap Shot meets Superbad.

The story is about the Danbury Trashers which was considered the most violent team in professional sports. The minor league hockey team accumulated more penalty minutes in one season than any other team before or since, but they also had the best record in the league. At their helm and president/Gm of the club was a 17-year-old kid named Aj Galante who was put in charge of the team by his father, the local king of waste management.

It follows Galante from mastering the moneyball of violence to

Film Review: ‘Wanderland’

Film Review: ‘Wanderland’
Though major studios used to crank them out by the truckload, today the movie musical is a fairly infrequent occurrence — not just because they’re commercially risky but because the genre itself is an inherently ambitious undertaking. Ranging from “Once” to Damien Chazelle’s pre-“La La Land” romance “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench,” there have been some moderately successful attempts at making indie musicals on a micro-budget, but the question still lingers of whether audiences are willing to accept a modern movie in which people sing out their emotions.

In a risky departure from a résumé otherwise dominated by broad comedy, Josh Klausner gives it a stab with “Wanderland.” Different though it may be from his 1999 debut “The 4th Floor” — a quasi-horror thriller with surreal touches — this oddball effort is more an exercise in low-key quirkiness set in a slightly alternative universe where everything but our protagonist is a little “off.

Television Stays Youthful Buoyed by New Distribution Methods and Content, Eurodata Report Shows

  • Variety
Between safe bets and innovative content trends, TV has kept its appeal and is taking advantage of new forms of distribution, research company Eurodata TV Worldwide reported Monday at TV conference and market MipTV in Cannes, France.

Eurodata observed strong regional disparities and the rise of new forms of consumption. Over the 95 countries analyzed by Eurodata last year for its “One TV Year in the World” report, the global individual viewing time for television stood at 2 hours and 56 minutes. However, this figure concealed strong disparities between the continents: from Asia with just 2 hours and 25 minutes to North America, which ranked highest with 4 hours and 3 minutes. Europe followed closely behind with 3 hours and 49 minutes per person daily.

“In the last 25 years, global TV viewing time has remained steady, despite the increasing availability of video content online. Thus, in North America and Asia, we are seeing a slight dip, but South America
