The best 2D Mario on home console since Super Mario World
29 November 2018 | by OlicosmicSee all my reviews

If there's one thing that surprised me with how much quality and overall fun times there is in it, it's this game, as it has everything a great 2D Mario game has and more. The visuals are a massive upgrade from NSMB DS, the gameplay is fantastic, the music is filled to the brim with happiness and adorable charm I can't get enough of, the level design is amazing, and the boss battles are almost as good as they were in Super Mario World, as the Koopa kids make a return in this game. The challenges in this game are also fun as well, whether that be finding a Toad in a level after a Koopa kid kidnapped them, defeating a lot of goombas, matching cards, sort of like in Super Mario Bros. 3, but only this time, on flippable fences, and more. The ability to be able to use abilities and/or power-ups before levels returns from SMB3 as well, and it's more user friendly than ever. This game is essentially a mix of NSMB DS, SMW, and SMB3 all in a fun, adorable, and masterpiece of a 2D platformer, and I couldn't recommend it enough, because even if you're skeptical about this game thanks to the stigma of the NSMB series being stale, don't be, because this is anything but, as it is the best 2D Mario on home console since Super Mario World.
