Swoosie Kurtz Joins Mayim Bialik Fox Comedy Series
Swoosie Kurtz has signed on to the multi-cam comedy “Call Me Kat,” formerly “Carla,” at Fox opposite Mayim Bialik.

The project is based on the BBC original “Miranda” created by Miranda Hart and received a series commitment at Fox back in September. It follows Carla (Bialik), a 39-year-old woman who struggles every day against society and her mother (Kurtz) to prove that you cannot have everything you want — and still be happy. Which is why she spent the money her parents set aside for her wedding to open a Cat Café in Louisville, Ky.

Kurtz’s character is named Sheila. Sheila grew up in Louisville and subscribes to very traditional gender roles. She views her daughter Kat’s unmarried status as her own personal failure. A charming narcissist, Sheila has used her sex appeal to date an endless array of men since Kat’s father died.

Peter Roth Named Chairman Of Warner Bros. Television Group As Part Of Contract Extension

Peter Roth, who has overseen the television production operations of Warner Bros for the past 21 years, has signed a new multi-year contract extension to remain at the helm of the independent TV studio. In conjunction with his new deal, Roth has been elevated to the newly created position of Chairman of the Warner Bros Television Group. The re-upping comes months ahead of the end of Roth’s current contract this coming summer. He will continue to report to Ann Sarnoff, Chair and CEO, Warner Bros.

Roth, who has served as President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros Television Group, since May 2013, will continue to oversee Warner Bros’ television production activities, including domestic production of scripted, unscripted and alternative series for U.S. broadcast networks, cable and streaming services. Roth’s elevation to chairman comes four months after his top lieutenants, Susan Rovner and Brett Paul, were upped to presidents Of Warner Bros Television.

Peter Roth Promoted to Become First-Ever Chairman of Warner Bros Television Group

Longtime television executive Peter Roth has signed a contract extension, upping him to the newly-created role of chairman of Warner Bros. Television Group.

Roth has overseen television production operations for Warner Bros. for 21 years, and has been serving as president and chief content officer of Warner Bros. Television Group since May of 2013. He will continue to maintain creative responsibility for Warner Bros.’ scripted, unscripted and alternative series for U.S. broadcast networks, cable and streaming services.

His promotion was announced Monday by Ann Sarnoff, chair and CEO of Warner Bros., to whom Roth will continue to report. Roth will also continue to work closely with Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, president of Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution.

CBS has given a pilot order to B Positive, a multi-camera comedy from Mom co-executive producer Marco Pennette, series creator Chuck Lorre, and Warner Bros. TV, where Lorre is under a deal.

B Positive is the second pilot order at CBS for Lorre this cycle, joining multi-cam The United States Of Al, with his fellow Big Bang Theory executive producers David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari, Reza Aslan and Warner Bros. TV.

The legendary “Big Band Theory” creator is an executive producer on the multi-cam comedy “B Positive,” which has received a pilot order at CBS.

“B Positive” centers around newly divorced dad Drew, who is at the end of his rope when face when finding a kidney donor. Fortunately, he runs into Gina, a rough-around-the edges woman from his past who volunteers her own. Together they form an unlikely bond and begin a journey that will change both of their lives.

The project hails from writer and executive producer Marco Pennette, who already works with Lorre on the Anna Faris and Allison Janney CBS sitcom “Mom.” Pennette has ample experience producing and writing comedies, having also worked on “Ugly Betty” and “Desperate Houswives.” The pilot is being produced by Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions, Inc.

Chuck Lorre is setting up yet another project at CBS.

The network has issued a pilot production commitment to “The United States of Al,” a multi-camera comedy which hails from “The Big Bang Theory” creator and his fellow “Big Bang” executive producers David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari.

The prospective series is described as a comedy about the friendship between Riley, a Marine combat veteran struggling to readjust to civilian life in Ohio, and Awalmir (Al), the Afghan interpreter who served with his unit and has just arrived to start a new life in America.

The series hails from Warner Bros Television and Lorre’s Chuck Lorre Productions, Inc. Religious studies scholar Reza Aslan and Mahyad Tousi are also EPs on the series.

If it goes to series, “The United States of Al” would be Lorre’s second show in quick succession to center around an immigrant to the United States.

Mona Garcea Joins Faith-Based Kingdom Studios as Head of Television

Kingdom Studios has recruited Mona Garcea to head up its television arm.

Garcea has long worked alongside Chuck Lorre, having served as a producer on “Mike & Molly,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Two and a Half Men,” and “Disjointed.” Garcea will find and develop family entertainment with broad commercial appeal for the studio and will report to co-CEOs Kevin Downes and Jon Erwin, who have an overall deal at Lionsgate.

Kingdom, which specializes in developing and producing inspirational and faith-based entertainment, was founded late last year by Jon and Andrew Erwin, Kevin Downes and Tony Young, the filmmakers behind Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions’ “I Can Only Imagine.” The studio’s first film, “I Still Believe,” will be released in March 2020.
