This beautifully shot documentary tells the story of two lifelong friends who embark on a goal to break the record of seeing the most birds in 24 hours. The goal becomes overshadowed by the richness in how each approaches life and their devotion to their friendship. The shots of the birds are amazing, but only accent the interpersonal dynamics at play. Not being a birder, I wasn't sure of how much I would like this film. As it turned out, I was fully engaged the whole time and even watched it again. I enjoyed it at least as much the second time. It's nice to see a film that is so engaging without any high speed action, extensive drama, or controversial subject matter. I applaud the filmmaker for being able to identify the heart and essence of his footage and so craftily execute it. Big Birding Day is just a throughly enjoyable well shot, well edited and well produced film.
