The series, which premieres on Feb. 6, heavily focuses on four ambitious professionals: Katy Keene (Lucy Hale), who wants to be the next great fashion designer; Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray) who's determined to make it big as a singer; Jorge, aka Ginger Lopez (Jonny Beauchamp), who's ready to take the Broadway world by storm; and Pepper Smith (Julia Chan), who wants to open her own version of Andy Warhol's Factory. Gerard Butler’s ‘Angel Has Fallen’ Rises to $1.5 Million at Thursday Box Office

Gerard Butler’s ‘Angel Has Fallen’ Rises to $1.5 Million at Thursday Box Office
Angel Has Fallen,” the action sequel starring Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman, earned $1.5 million at the box office Thursday from preview screenings at 2,600 locations. It opens on 3,286 screens this weekend.

Lionsgate is releasing “Angel Has Fallen” following up from the success of both “Olympus Has Fallen” in 2013 and “London Has Fallen” in 2016. It’s the widest release this weekend as the summer comes to a close, with Fox Searchlight’s horror and thriller “Ready or Not” having already opened on Wednesday.

The studio is projecting “Angel” to open in the low to mid teen range this weekend, with independent trackers estimating approximately $13 million. For a comparison, “London Has Fallen” earned only $850,000 in its debut opposite a then record-setting weekend for Disney’s “Zootopia,” but it ultimately raked in a $21.6 million opening. The original “Olympus Has Fallen” opened to $30.3 million and grossed $170.2 million worldwide.

'The Wolf's Call' ('Le Chant du loup'): Film Review

'The Wolf's Call' ('Le Chant du loup'): Film Review
Submarine movies are not usually a dime a dozen, probably because they cost more than a dime to make. But the past few years have seen a handful of submersible flicks hitting screens both big and small, including the flag-waving Gerard Butler starrer Hunter Killer and Thomas Vinterberg’s Kursk (both out in 2018), the submarine-as-pirate ship saga Black Sea, and the Shawn Ryan series Last Resort, which was a sort of Mutiny on the Bounty centered on a sub carrying ballistic warheads.

The French now enter the game with The Wolf’s Call (Le Chant du loup), tackling the genre from the highly specific angle ...

With ‘Madea Family Funeral,’ Tyler Perry Ends Franchise on a High Note
Tyler Perry has spent over 15 years in heavy make-up and padding, doling out tough love as the title character of the “Madea” movies. With “A Madea Family Funeral,” the gun-toting grandmother is going out with a bang. The 11th and final installment in the long-running franchise beat box office expectations when it opened last weekend, generating a solid $27 million when it hit 2,442 North American theaters.

“Family Funeral” may not have racked up the best start in the “Madea” series — that distinction belongs to “Madea Goes to Jail” ($41 million) — but it ranks as the franchise’s second biggest debut in nearly a decade. It’s a rare feat for any franchise to keep cranking out films that are actually making money after so many installments. Tastes change, audiences move on, but Madea seems to have retained her hold on a devoted fanbase. To put the opening weekend of “A Madea Family Funeral” into perspective,

Red Stewart chats with Donovan Marsh about Hunter Killer…

Donovan Marsh is a South African filmmaker who has been working in the film and television industries since the 1990s. He is best known for Spud, Avenged, and Hunter Killer, which is released on Digital, DVD and Blu-ray this month.

Flickering Myth had the privilege to interview him, and I in turn had the honor to conduct it:

The last movie you directed was Avenged or iNumber Number, which you also wrote. For Hunter Killer, however, the screenplay was written by different screenwriters. What would you say is the biggest difference between directing something you’ve written versus someone else’s work?

I have to get to the core of the writer’s heart and discover why they were moved to write each scene, each sequence. When you are the writer, that information is already hard wired into you.

How ‘The Upside’ Beat the Box Office Bankruptcy Curse

  • Variety
How ‘The Upside’ Beat the Box Office Bankruptcy Curse
The Upside,” a feel good film about the bond that forms between a wealthy quadriplegic and his caretaker, scored a surprising box office victory last weekend. The movie had to overcome a series of obstacles and setbacks before it topped charts.

In the weeks leading up to the drama’s release, star Kevin Hart had been the subject of countless headlines analyzing whether or not the comedian will host this year’s Oscars. The entertainer was offered the gig, but quickly stepped down after controversy sparked over homophobic jokes he made in the past. A little unwanted press, however, is nothing compared to the turmoil leading up to the movie’s theatrical debut.

Its rocky gestation to the big screen makes “The Upside,” which doubled industry expectations with a $19.5 million opening weekend, all the more impressive. An English-language remake of the French hit “Les Intouchables” was first announced in 2011, and

Making A Terrorist: ‘The Journey’ Director Explains How He Created Evil on Screen

  • The Wrap
Iraqi director Mohamed Al-Daradji can remember the exact day he was held hostage by Al Qaeda: Dec 16, 2004. Al-Daradji and his film crew at the time had guns pointed at their heads, seconds away from death. It was during a time when he thought terrorists were only evil men. In the coming years, Al-Daradji realized there was something more sinister behind the madness.

“Usually the victims are women, but a lot of women since 2003 have become suicide bombers,” the director told TheWrap’s Steve Pond at a Q&A on Monday following a screening of his film, “The Journey” at the Landmark Theatres in Los Angeles. The film is Iraq’s entry into the Oscar foreign film race.

“Is she in control, or are they [Al Qaeda] in control?” is the question Al-Daradji sought to answer in “The Journey,” a film he was inspired to make after being taken hostage.
