Pop Cult Corner – Star Wars director fantasy picks, Disney streaming opportunities, and Marvel alter-egos

Hello, welcome to Pop Cult Corner, a new feature exploring the latest pop culture talking points from the worlds of TV, film and the wider industry. This first edition will be looking at Disney, particularly the Star Wars and Marvel properties – two behemoths in today’s popular culture. I’ll be giving my random pick for the new Star Wars: Episode IX director, discussing the potential surrounding the Disney streaming service and exploring some new character alter-egos we could see popping up in Avengers: Infinity War and the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Star Wars Director: Fantasy Pick

In a previous article, I suggested it was pointless to pick a director that we want to see for Star Wars: Episode IX because the reality of who we will get after Colin Trevorrow’s unceremonious exit will be someone very similar to J.J. Abrams. Despite all that (and my very unsuccessful petition

Musicals make everything better.

That's one of the lessons Barry and Kara learned when the superheroes teamed up on The Flash Season 3 Episode 17 "Duet."

It wasn't easy to pick our favorite moments, but that's what we've tried to do.

Scroll through our choices and feel free to add your own in the comments below.

VeggieTales In The House Season 4 Hits On Netflix On 9-23 Catch A Sneak Peek

Among the myriad titles that now call themselves Netflix Originals, VeggieTales in the House is part of the great children’s offerings that go a little too unnoticed for my tastes.

Now sure, we wouldn’t be on season 4 of this one if no one paid attention to it, and/or the other offerings available for kids, but the big name productions are the things people won’t stop forcing you to hear about… unless you travel in certain circles.

Well, if you’re near people of an appropriate age, it’s about time someone made sure you were up on this one, or clued you in on the show’s return if you are already familiar with it.

Catch a couple of clips below, and tune in for the new season.

8 Musicians With Bizarre (And Fascinating) Alter Egos

When it comes to popularity, most musicians are reluctant to risk losing it. Gaining mainstream popularity as a musician is such a ludicrously difficult accomplishment that once they’ve got it, they’re desperate to hold on to it.

But popularity doesn’t come without its disadvantages. In many ways, mainstream success cements the public’s (and more importantly, the fans’) opinions and expectations. Many musicians achieve popularity because of a certain sound or style, and to experiment with these ingredients can often lead to disaster (take Metallica’s Load, for example, which saw many fans disappointed).

This inability to experiment can lead to disillusionment and frustration – and that’s where alter egos come in. Alter egos are a safe way for musicians to distance themselves from their main act and try new things. If it goes badly, they can just retreat back to their primary stage name. The

Five Film Composers that Hollywood Needs Back

Hollywood has no shortage of talented composers crafting mostly serviceable tunes for the next young adult literary adaptation or prestige awards tearjerker. But for every auteur like Hans Zimmer and John Williams, you have musical yes men pounding out ominous notes in anticipation of the next horror movie jump scare or making ratatat noise to underscore a superhero chase scene. The film world screams for diverse sounds, but is often left

Broad City, Ep. 2.05: “Hashtag Fomo” is your main squeeze

Broad City, Season 2, Episode 5, “Hashtag Fomo”

Written by Chris Kelly

Directed by Jeff Tomsic

Airs Wednesdays at 10:30pm on Comedy Central

Alter egos for characters in comedy television series is nothing new. Indeed, Abbi’s Val is a similar kind of double life persona as Ron Swanson’s Duke Silver on Parks and Recreation. There’s something special about Val, though. Maybe it’s because, as has been pointed out by many others online, that crazy lady back in the season premiere screeching, “Val!”, on the subway wasn’t so nuts after all. Maybe it’s because it allows Abbi Jacobson to break out a ridiculous Prohibition-era accent, strut around like an old-timey diva, and swallow diamonds with aplomb.

A crucial aspect of this episode is something previous reviews have pointed out is happening this season: the Abbi revolution. This isn’t a whole new Abbi, so perhaps evolution

12 Musicians You Didn’t Realise Have Truly Bizarre Alter Egos

Joel Ryan/AP

It must be hard being a famous musician, because so many of them desperately want to be other people. How else do you explain the sheer volume of alternate personalities that have been invented in music over the last few decades?

From David Bowie to The Beatles, even the most famous and beloved musicians get the urge to live in someone else’s skin for a bit. Sometimes, as with Ziggy Stardust and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the results are a smashing success and become catalysts for future musician’s to indulge in some split personality fun.

With the number of musicians who take a stab at acting later in their careers, it seems a lot of alter egos are born out of frustration for having chosen the wrong profession in the first place. Or maybe they were struggling actors at one point, made

2015 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Jordan Galland’s Ava’s Possessions

I originally took notice of the project when the trades announced that the oft-used supporting indie starlet Louisa Krause (non-related pic above — who we interviewed back in the day for Martha Marcy May Marlene) was the featured “potential screamer” lead on this project. Filmmaker Jordan Galland has flirted with Park City before, his debut Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead (2009) received a special screening status at Slamdance. Along with his sophomore film item Alter Egos (2012), the summer shot Brooklyn set Ava’s Possessions basically informs us that the musician slash filmmaker’s interests lie within the framework of the horror genre. Certainly the addition of supporting players include Lou Taylor Pucci, Jemima Kirke, Stella Schnabel (You Wont Miss Me) and John Ventimiglia amps up the end product, and Galland’s ongoing creative collaboration with musician Sean Lennon might earmark the project as an appointment with the occult that avoids trappings of

X-Men Screenwriter Zak Penn Set To Rewrite Ready Player One

Warner Bros. has been sitting on the rights to Ernie Cline’s novel Ready Player One for four years now, having acquired them in a bidding war in 2010. Things seem to be finally moving forward, however, with the involvement of renowned screenwriter Zak Penn. Having helped out on The Avengers, X2 and Pacific Rim 2, he also wrote X Men: Last Stand, Elektra and The Incredible Hulk. Now, he’s being brought in to deliver a finished script that was originally adapted by Eric Eason (Journey To The End Of The Night) and the book’s author, Cline.

Ready Player One is a futuristic sci-fi tale, set after the human race has exhausted the Earth’s supply of fossil fuels. While the world has descended into chaos and violence, the population has become increasingly reliant on a multiplayer online virtual reality simulation called Oasis – as a means of distraction and escape.

Cracked Casts: TV Shows That Changed Actresses or Replaced Major Characters

When the second season of our popular crime drama Cracked premiers January 6th, psychologically "cracked" (not broken) Detective Aidan Black (David Sutcliffe, Private Practice) will be paired with a new psychiatrist, Dr. Clara Malone (Brooke Nevin, Alter Egos), replacing Psych Crimes liaison Dr. Daniella Ridley (Stefanie von Pfetten, Seeds of Destruction). Changing a major character between seasons may seem like a pretty risky maneuver for a fledgling show, but we’re very excited about the energy and emotion Nevin brings to the cast. Besides, it wouldn’t be the first time that it’s happened on a popular series. Here’s our list of the more memorable actress replacements and character changes on TV.
