Movie Review – Haunt (2019)

Haunt, 2019.

Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.

Starring Katie Stevens, Will Brittain, Lauryn Alisa McClain, Andrew Caldwell, Shazi Raja, Schuyler Helford, and Phillip Johnson Richardson.

Synopsis:

On Halloween, a group of friends encounter an “extreme” haunted house that promises to feed on their darkest fears. The night turns deadly as they come to the horrifying realization that some nightmares are real.

When Halloween attraction documentaries achieve more sustainable notes of peril and terror than your fictional Halloween horror movie, you’ve got yourself an issue. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, most famously recognized as the writers of A Quiet Place, try their hand at haunt-based exploitation much like Hell Fest and The Houses October Built. Descriptively titled Haunt, you’re sold as executed. October festivities go awry when backwoods scare proprietors lock unsuspecting patrons inside an attraction designed to kill, not spook. Generic as sin, scant on character development,

Frightfest 2019: ‘Haunt’ Review

  • Nerdly
Stars: Katie Stevens, Will Brittain, Lauryn Alisa McClain, Andrew Caldwell, Shazi Raja, Schuyler Helford | Written and Directed by Scott Beck, Bryan Woods

On Halloween night, a group of college friends travel to a remote country location to enter an extreme haunted house attraction. Extreme because it promises to feed on all their darkest fears. But the night turns deadly as they come to the horrifying realization that some nightmares are real and the mischief-makers behind the enterprise are something else altogether.

Films about Halloween-set haunted house attractions are nothing new, so what can a film, by the writers of the well-received, critcally-acclaimed, audience-pleasing A Quiet Place, bring to the genre? If they hype is to be believed, a lot. However in truth it turns out nothing much really. And nothing that wasn’t done a Lot better by The Houses October Built (aka The Houses of Halloween).

The worst thing

A Wicked Tale: Walking Dead Producers Create Shared Fairytale Horror Universe
Shared universes seem to be all the rage these days, and today we have word on another one in the works. This time it will be a shared universe of horror films based on reimagined versions of classic fairytales and public domain characters from Circle of Confusion, the production company behind The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead.

The first film in the series will be A Wicked Tale, which is described as a contemporary horror take on the classic Brothers Grimm tale, Hansel & Gretel. This flick is based on an original script written by Pay The Ghost and I.T. screenwriter Dan Kay that tells the tale of two college students who stumble upon something sinister in the local woods after an altercation with a fellow student leads to deadly consequences.

Along with being the production company behind AMC's hit zombie series The Walking Dead and it's

  • DailyDead
Happy October, boils and ghouls! Now that our favorite month has officially kicked off, that means many of us are putting together a list of must-watch movies to get into the Halloween spirit. With that in mind, this writer has once again pulled together a varied list of 31 (well, technically more than 31, but who can resist cheating a bit when it comes to horror movies?) films that are currently streaming on Netflix that should undoubtedly get you primed for the big day on October 31st.

It’s worth noting that several great titles not included on this list are making their way to Netflix during October that would also make for great Scary Movie Month additions, including Cult of Chucky on 10/3, Raw on 10/4, and the Stephen King adaptation 1922 on 10/20, with season 2 of Stranger Things kicking off on 10/27.

Happy viewing, everyone, and look for more Halloween-related articles coming your way all month long,

Found footage may not be a theatrical sensation anymore (if it ever really was), but the genre is alive and well on the VOD market. Well, alive at least. It’s accessible in a Diy sense due to not really needing actors or a budget in order to create, quality be damned. A few years back one of the most notable entries was The Houses October Built, which was a hybrid of documentary footage (the full documentary is included as a bonus on the first film’s Blu-ray) and a narrative through line. The doc is about haunts around the country
