Hot Titles at Toronto Film Festival 2018
The Toronto International Film Festival is a launching pad for Oscar-hopefuls, but it’s also a thriving market. In the past, movies such as “I, Tonya” and “Still Alice” have scored major deals at the Canadian gathering, going on to enjoy critical success and awards love.

That’s always the dream. But for every “I, Tonya,” the festival is littered with examples of sales that sputtered out when the movies finally saw the light of day. Remember “Hardcore Henry,” “Top Five,” or “Begin Again”? Didn’t think so. However all of those films inspired bidding wars up north. Their failure is a reminder of the very real dangers of festival fever, the virus that encourages normally level-headed studio executives to keep sweetening their offers beyond the point of reason.

Which movies will inspire big bids at this year’s fest? Here are a few that have buyers buzzing.

Why Buyers Will Be More Cautious Than Ever at Toronto Film Festival
The Orchard thought it had landed one of the glossiest packages at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, “I Love You, Daddy.” The boundary-pushing story of a TV writer who grows alarmed after an older director becomes obsessed with his teenage daughter, the movie had all the makings of an art-house breakout. But the passion project directed by and starring Louis C.K., which sold for a hefty $5 million, would never open in theaters.

Less than a month later, “I Love You, Daddy” was deemed un-releasable after an investigation published in The New York Times revealed that C.K. had forced several women to watch him masturbate. The fiasco taught The Orchard a valuable lesson, one that has taken on added resonance as one high-profile figure after another has become embroiled in sexual harassment or abuse scandals.

“You have to do your homework,” says Paul Davidson, the indie studio’s

I just wanted to start off by asking how the story sort of came about and what it was that made you and Marc [Basch] put pen to paper?

You know, it’s always an interesting question.

Every Summer brings about with it that surprising, feel-good film of the year – whether it’s the likes of The Big Sick, or Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Chef or Begin Again. This year, that film is Brett Haley’s Hearts Beat Loud and it might just be one of the best things you’ll see in 2018.
