Writers were given the choice of adapting an existing story or to come up with an original idea. Half of the first series were made loosely based on Chesterton stories. The Chesterton stories were set all over the world and at different times, but a decision was made to anchor the stories in a fixed place and time.

Filming takes place in the Gloucestershire village of Blockley using the church of Saints Peter and Paul (Church of England) as the St Mary Roman Catholic church of the series and the vicarage transformed into presbytery for Father Brown's residence. Other villages used are Winchcombe, Upper Slaughter, Kemerton, Sudeley Castle, and at Winchcombe railway station on the heritage Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway. At Sudeley Castle, the tithe barn and St Mary's Chapel are used.

On Monday, 9th September 2019 the British Broadcasting Corporation announced that they have commissioned a 10-episode eighth series of the popular crime drama to be broadcast in 2020 and a 10-episode ninth series to be broadcast in 2021.

The dog in season 1 episode 8 titled, "The Face of Death", is the same dog who appears in the series Doc Martin. The dog's real name is Dodger. Neither the dog nor his handler/trainer appears in the credits of Father Brown, but does appear in the credits of Doc Martin.

In S5E14, Father Brown calls his bicycle "Bucephalus" it shares the same name as Alexander the greats horse. Father Brown added that his bicycle was not rusty.

In series four episode five, "Daughter of Autolycus", Flambeau is shot in his left arm. When he appears again in series five episode fifteen, "The Penitent Man", he has a scar on his left arm. Excellent continuity.
