‘The Terror’s Christopher Naoki Lee Makes Feature Directorial Debut With Socially-Minded ‘Dinner Party’; Dana Ziyasheva Rounds Out Cast For ‘Greatland’
Actor Christopher Naoki Lee, whose credits include AMC’s The Terror and Fox’s Deputy, is set to make his feature directorial debut with the socially-minded pic Dinner Party which he co-wrote with Greek alum Daniel Weaver.

Lee also stars in the film which, as the title suggests, centers on a dinner party with a group of diverse Millennials. As they dine and converse, a verdict arrives for a controversial trial regarding sexual misconduct that has captivated the nation — a very timely topic considering the recent Weinstein verdict. As a result the dinner party turns into a moment for all the attendees to look at their own histories and determine whether the friendship that binds them can withstand their differences, especially when they realize one of their own is guilty of a past transgression.

“As an Asian-American born and raised in a diverse community near L.A., Dinner Party is

Zola Star Taylour Paige Went the Extra Mile While Prepping to Play a Stripper

From the trippy opening scene, Zola crackles and pops off the screen. Based on an iconic viral Twitter thread from 2015 - which was quickly dubbed #TheStory - the comedy-thriller follows Detroit waitress and oft-stripper A'Ziah "Zola" King as she gets sucked into a wild 48-hour saga involving strip clubs, pimps, murder, and more with a "white b*tch" named Stefani pulling the strings.

"Y'all wanna hear a story about why me and this b*tch here fell out?" Zola asks. "It's kind of long but full of suspense."

Zola debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, where stars Taylour Paige (Zola), Riley Keough (Stefani), Colman Domingo, and Nicholas Braun assembled alongside director Janicza Bravo and the real-life Zola for the screening. I spoke to Paige about the project, which is her latest after roles in 2018's White Boy Rick and the former VH1 dance drama series Hit the Floor.

Why ‘Zola’ Filmmaker Janicza Bravo Isn’t Sweating the Sundance Premiere

Why ‘Zola’ Filmmaker Janicza Bravo Isn’t Sweating the Sundance Premiere
Writer-director Janicza Bravo is a officially Sundance veteran. “Zola” is her second feature to premiere and her fourth time showing work at the festival. And as a such, she’s taking all of the buzz around her film — based on the 148-Tweet stripper saga that went viral in 2015 — in stride.

“I can’t wait to show the work, and — maybe this is graphic — but I can’t wait to amputate it,” Bravo said. “It’s been like this appendage that’s been attached to my body for close to three years, and I’m ready to cut it off.”

It’s been a long road from Twitter to the big screen for the unconventional tale. “Zola” tells the wild and dramatic — and mostly true — tale of a woman named A’ziah “Zola” Wells, who follows a new friend from Detroit to Tampa, Fla. to earn some money stripping. Before long,

‘The Perfection’: Film Review

‘The Perfection’: Film Review
It’s punishment more than practice that makes “The Perfection,” which is less a horror film per se than a grisly yet upscale grand guignol melodrama. Richard Shepard’s very tricky suspense film, co-written with the TV writing-producing team of Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder, has been a success for Netflix. The streaming service released the film earlier this year, picking it up after it made a stir at Fantastic Fest 2018.

The tale of classical musicianship and elaborate revenge is easier to admire than actually like, given somewhat repellent content grounded in character psychology that does not bear close scrutiny after these terse 90 minutes are over. Still, the icily well-crafted gamesmanship Shepard and company have devised certainly makes that time pass quickly, if uncomfortably.

The director has turned mostly to small-screen work since his last theatrical feature, “Dom Hemingway” (2013), including a dozen episodes of “Girls,” whose Allison Williams plays the lead here.

‘Zola,’ the First Movie Based on Viral Twitter Thread, Will Premiere at Sundance

‘Zola,’ the First Movie Based on Viral Twitter Thread, Will Premiere at Sundance
Zola,” a buzzy title among next year’s Sundance lineup, comes from unprecedented source material: a 148-tweet Twitter thread from October 2015.

The movie had an arduous journey to the screen due to ongoing allegations around James Franco, whose company Rabbit Bandini bought the rights to the story, while Franco was originally attached to direct. A24 is now backing the movie, directed by Janicza Bravo, and written by Bravo and Jeremy O. Harris.

In fall 2015, a woman named Aziah Wells (nickname: Zola) told an exaggerated — but not that exaggerated! — story of her journey from Detroit to Tampa, Fla. in order to make money stripping. Wells was conscripted to go to Tampa by a woman named Jessica, whom she’d met while serving her at Hooters; Jessica’s boyfriend, Jarrett; and their roommate, nicknamed Z, who turns out to be a violent pimp. What was meant to be an innocent trip of
