An absolute disaster of a port
22 October 2018 | by OlicosmicSee all my reviews

I didn't think it would be possible to mess up porting a 16-bit game onto a 32-bit handheld so bad, but, oh my god, was I wrong. With the terrible screen crunch, the abysmal slowdowns, the weirdly remade music and sound effects, and just overall lack of any functionality makes this one of the worst ports of all time, and one that shouldn't have turned out this way. It makes no sense whatsoever how games like Donkey Kong Country, Super Mario World, and Yoshis Island, which are all games from the SNES, can all run beautifully on the GBA, yet this, a game that originated on the Sega Genesis, which was somewhat less powerful than the SNES, runs absolutely terribly on the GBA. There's absolutely no excuse for this to run as bad as it does, but here we are. This port isn't just terrible, but it's also insulting, as it takes one of the best games of the early 90s and completely ruins everything about it, and for it coming out on the 15th anniversary of Sonic just makes it all that much more of a colossal slap in the face. What's weird is the fact that this didn't come out on the DS, considering that it's been out for 2 years at this point, but still, even the GBC could've ran this if it were optimized right. For those reading this, stay clear of this piece of absolute garbage, as it takes all of the greatness of the 16-bit masterpiece and flushes it all down the toilet to become an absolute disaster of a port.
