A bit lost with all that time to fill
23 September 2014 | by cpetc2See all my reviews

The opening 5 minutes seem to be some sort of endurance test for non fans. I have to be honest, the only reason I wanted to watch was because of the show on Starz. I really didn't like the bias that seemed to lean towards the female director, and the shrugging off of Dawson as some "internet guy." So I kind of "rooted?" for him with this..

I didn't especially find the opening 5 minutes incredibly offensive (although this movie certainly won't make the 10 minute mark with a fair amount of people in this country) but it wasn't really "laugh out loud" funny either. There was a lot of rapid fire stuff going on, kind of like they used an offensive joke book for inspiration when they did the opening tracking shot. The problem with this movie as a "movie" is the lighting is a bit too bright, reminds me of a MTV series without any sort of mood installed. But considering it is a comedy, that really shouldn't take much away from it. The characters do feel a bit wonky however. The male with the glasses has a bit of a ambiguity to his "straightness" - I just plain could not buy that he was so hard up for some "p***y" Then after a while I felt like he looked a lot like the girl he was chasing through the movie. 30 minutes in I'm like "hey they could be brother and sister!" There are too many moments that just seem like "bits" that are dropped in the middle of this movie that aren't really gelling the story along. When the movie tries to be sweet and dramatic, you really aren't too involved in it; there's too much trying to shoehorn some dick joke every 30 seconds that trip up any sort of inspiration to "get behind" any of the characters. There's no true "straight" character in this, they all have these flaws that don't really get a proper arc.

The movie just feels way too much like these bits that are dropped into another story, way too much forcing of jokes and bits into the story. Like okay, you want to have a handicapped girl chugging beer, sure. Some jokes and sight gags may make people laugh, but the movie as a whole just doesn't feel right. I feel like somebody could take some of the bits and make tight little 2 minute internet videos and they'd work for that: "Two minutes of whore jokes" - there's no substance, I just didn't care about the characters and CERTAINLY was not buying some characters as they were trying to be presented.

I didn't get grossed out or anything, but could see it being an issue with some people, I smiled a couple times at jokes (they have a running gag on party drugs that made me laugh) but the unbelievability of most of the characters made it very hard to enjoy this movie. The Janie character seemed to be the "least" crummy, but even she admits to using her "friends" - there's no real protagonist here. I feel like comedy gets a raw deal most times, but I honestly feel like the jokes here may not be strong enough for the story to not matter. I could be in the minority, I very genuinely wanted to enjoy this & I tried to watch this with an open mind, but I give 'Not Cool' a 3/10.
