Sardinia Film Festival Aims to Boost Summer Cinema Attendance in Italy
For decades, Italy’s box office has suffered the summertime blues due to a scarcity of blockbusters from the Hollywood studios, which noted that Italian audiences were more interested in going to the beach than a movie theater. However, that is changing.

The Filming Italy Sardegna Festival, which runs June 13-16 and is Italy’s single start of summer event, is perfectly positioned to become a prime driver for this crucial seasonal push.

“I’ve been saying for years that summer festivals should promote summer releases,” says Tiziana Rocca, who launched the fest on the island of Sardinia in Italy last year.

Italy’s push for summer releases is the result of a joint effort between the studios and all sectors of Italy’s film industry, largely prompted by the government that recently got all sides to sit at the table and agree to remove this anomaly that was causing

Film Review: ‘The Poison Rose’

  • Variety
It is 1978 in the City of Angels and the hard-drinking washed-up sleuth Carson Phillips is having another boozy day through its atmospheric streets. There is a hint of innate coolness and self-deprecation in his elongated voiceover intro — you might even briefly mistake Carson, played by a one-note John Travolta, for a Philip Marlowe or Jake Gittes type. But “The Poison Rose,” an astonishingly listless neo-noir wannabe from director George Gallo (writer of 1988’s “Midnight Run”), is not the deliberately poor “Chinatown” imitation it starts off as — that could have been perversely daring, maybe even somewhat entertaining. It in fact becomes something a lot worse, when Carson heads to Galveston, Texas, in search of a missing person, at which point, viewers are taken hostage by this mix of mysterious exes, confusing accents, and desperately labored plotting.

It all starts promisingly enough, with an attractive femme dressed in a seductive pose and

John Travolta's Daughter Ella Bleu, 19, Is Entering the Family Business: He's 'the Best Mentor'
Ella Bleu Travolta always had an inkling she’d follow in the footsteps of her famous parents.

“Since I was very little, I’ve loved performing, singing, dancing and putting on shows at home for my family and friends,” the 19-year-old burgeoning actress tells People in this week’s issue.

Attendance at her homespun plays was “mandatory,” jokes Ella, whose parents, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, dutifully watched their budding thespian from the front row. “In our house in Maine we have this stage area set up with a little red curtain and my friends and I would perform there…

Behind-the-Camera Crews With Disabilities Demand Inclusion

Behind-the-Camera Crews With Disabilities Demand Inclusion
Hollywood, aiming for more diversity, hopes inclusion riders will help broaden the composition of behind-the-camera crews. But so far, people with disabilities — who comprise nearly 20% of the population — have been left out of the conversation.

David Shore, creator of Sony TV-ABC’s “The Good Doctor,” is one of the few execs who has been scrupulous about giving opportunities to people with disabilities behind the scenes. “These people are incredibly underrepresented in films and TV,” he says. “It’s important to have characters like this on-screen, but it would be hypocritical to put them in front of the camera and not behind. They’re capable of so much, and we should make it possible.”

Though statistics on below-the-line hiring are shockingly low, some individuals are proving that the practice is successful.

James Cude has been working as an editor for 18 years, on series including MTV’s “Suspect” and Syfy’s “Cosplay Melee” and “Haunted Highway,
