Storyline

Elderly Francis Coyle recalls how in 1943 an American Air Force unit came to the Northern Irish village of Moybeg, where his mother Rose and father Michael kept the shop and bar. The locals are not welcoming to the incomers, especially when Francis's 16 year old sister rejects love-lorn Barney Quinn to go on a date with 20-year old pilot Frank Barnhill, who is beaten up by the villagers and saved only by Rose's intervention. A year later Frank is killed in action. Rose herself, as an Englishwoman, feels slightly isolated and is pleased when Captain Ronald Dreyfuss asks her to act as liaison between the locals and the servicemen. Written by don @ minifie-1

Goofs

About 2/3 of the way through the episode LT Barnhill comes across young Francis along the road and offers him a ride. Just then a B-17 flies overhead and Barnhill says to Francis, "that's Lima Mike, good old Lima Mike," referring to the B-17's identification letters. In 1943 it would have been Love Mike. Lima wasn't adopted for the U.S. phonetic alphabet for L until 1956. See more »

Quotes

Captain Ronald Dreyfuss: And, um, I-I wasn't expecting to find you. As you, if you see what I mean. The lady on the shore.
Rose Coyne: You make me sound like a Tennysonian heroine.
Captain Ronald Dreyfuss: "I am half sick of shadows," said the Lady of Shallot.
Rose Coyne: Gosh. That's, erm, a bit of a favourite of mine, that one.
