Gerard Butler's Has Fallen Series Could Get Three More Sequels

Richard Jordan Nov 11, 2019

The bombastic action franchise could be expanding and going global, with more films and international TV spin-offs planned.

The Has Fallen Cinematic Universe is expanding. Yep, the producers of the Gerard Butler-starring franchise have revealed some grand plans for the future, including up to three (!) more feature films and a host of international TV spin-offs…

Against all odds, the film series – which kicked off with Antoine Fuqua's White House-set thriller Olympus Has Fallen back in 2013 – has amassed something of a cult following, with action lovers responding to the unashamedly overblown adventures of Butler's beleaguered secret service agent Mike Banning.

As Deadline reports, series producer Alan Siegel told the American Film Market’s finance conference that the filmmakers are looking at developing a fourth, fifth, and sixth instalment in the series. He also said that they are considering loaning out the franchise rights to international production companies,

Three More ‘Has Fallen’ Movies Are Reportedly On The Way

Lionsgate

There’s no doubt a massive guilty pleasure watching the ‘Has Fallen’ Movies; ‘Olympus’, ‘London’, and more recently ‘Angel’ with Gerard Butler. The trilogy has struck a massive chord with audiences over the years and it comes with no surprise that more movies are being planned in this hugely successful series of films.

The films revolve around Butler’s Mike Banning, a secret service agent tasked with protecting the president in various scenarios. Aaron Eckhart played said president in the first two movies, while Morgan Freeman stepped into the shoes of the most powerful man on the planet in ‘Angel’.

It is being reported that three more films with Butler as Banning are in the works, along with some rumblings that the series will also spawn a TV/streaming spin-off that could be set in a new location featuring characters yet to be seen in a forthcoming installment on the big screen.

Gerard Butler's Fallen Franchise Is Getting 3 More Movies, Possibly a TV Show

Gerard Butler's Fallen Franchise Is Getting 3 More Movies, Possibly a TV Show
Another trilogy for the Fallen franchise is in the works. The franchise started with 2013's Olympus Has Fallen and has grown to become a worldwide box office success. All three of the previous installments have grossed over $500 million, despite what critics may have to say about them. The majority of the box office success comes from overseas, which is key to understanding the future of the franchise, which may include a spin-off TV series too.

Fallen producer Alan Siegel says that the worldwide success made him think of other options for the future of the franchise. First of all, this means that fourth, fifth, and sixth installments are planned, which means there's a brand-new trilogy that Gerard Butler is expected to star in. While making the latest in the franchise, Angel Has Fallen, the decision was made to make a more character-driven experience, which will be explored in the proposed new trilogy.

We have to tell important stories. We won’t stop doing that. We know that there are important stories and we know there’s an audience for them.

Speaking at the American Film Market’s finance conference, Siegel also added that the company is considering selling the franchise IP to international television for spin-offs that could star local actors, and in turn those actors could appear in the upcoming features.

“If we do it in India, the star of that could come into Angel Has Fallen 4. It could be a symbiotic relationship,” he said.

Alongside being Butler’s manager, Siegel also co-runs production company G-base with the actor.

London-based financier and producer Anton, which already fully finances a slate of its own feature films and short-form content, as well as co-financing big-budget TV shows like HBO/BBC’s “His Dark Materials,” is moving into the development and production of its own scripted series, Anton founder Sebastien Raybaud tells Variety.

In 2017 Anton entered a co-production partnership with the BBC, with an initial investment of £150 million ($193 million), to greenlight premium British drama with international appeal, such as “McMafia,” “Les Misérables” and “His Dark Materials,” which launched this week to stellar numbers.
