For ten years, from 1948 to 1958, the anthology TV series Studio One in Hollywood (1948) was broadcast live on the CBS network. It brought acclaimed drama to American homes during the era known as the First Golden Age of Television. The series launched the careers of many young actors and directors who later became famous, including: Jack Palance, Jack Warden, Joanne Woodward, Natalie Wood, Charlton Heston, Jack Klugman, Cloris Leachman, John Frankenheimer, James Dean, Elizabeth Montgomery, Tony Randall, Jackie Gleason, Art Carney, Dennis Hopper, Warren Beatty, John Forsyth, Grace Kelly, Lloyd Bridges, Kevin McCarthy, Jessica Tandy, Lee Remick, Richard Kiley, Leslie Nielson, Jayne Meadows, and many more. In addition, actors Charlton Heston, Jack Klugman, Cloris Leachman, and director John Frankenheimer, describe the challenges and opportunities afforded by working in live television.
