It's revealed that the person convicted of the Purcell kidnapping and murder is Brett Woodard. However, since Woodard was killed by Wayne, he could not have been brought to trial, let alone convicted. Police investigations will sometimes continue after a suspect is deceased, particularly in high profile crimes where the public might have an interest in knowing what happened.
