Excellent! The Clavell book is fantastic (which gets in my top 5 of all time; along with A Kestrel for a Knave, Dune, Interview with the Vampire & Great Expectations) & this adaptation doesn't fall short.
Everything about Shogun works. The acting is excellent - even when Chamberlain hams it up. Not much more to say.
No doubt a remake is on the cards. That will probably get butchered by Hollywood PC politics.
Nothing is perfect, but, I've given Shogun 10.
The New Pope (2020)
Out Of Control Carousel
I gave up 3/4 way through the first episode. I just got bored of trying to find the story. It was like watching an out of control carousel that I was trying to get on - you have to allow the audience on to the ride.
Watched like an 80's pop video with an overblown budget by a David Lynch obsessed director.
Pretentious. Not user-friendly.
Carry On Dracula
High camp frolics with the obligatory Carry On bad accents & wigs.
The first episode watches too much like a soft-core homoerotic comedy & if they'd gone full-in on that, it, possibly would have worked? Maybe? But it's just caught in a limbo. Too ridiculous to be taken seriously & too sincere to be wholly comedic.
We're greeted by a Dracula channelling the voice of Nelson Mandela, which, quickly evolves into a vague impersonation of Kenneth Williams, so much so, I was expecting a 'Oh! Matron.'
As for Lady Van Helsing's accent (because we can't have alpha straight white male heroes any more, can we, BBC) it darts from Ireland across mainland Europe & Mina's wig is, well, Carry on...
Some folk may like it. It definitely has a contemporary PC friendly Carry On vibe, but, It's not going down as a classic adaptation.
6 Underground (2019)
Watches Like An Aftershave Advert
A 13 year old boy would do a better job of weaving this together. It's too disjointed & florescent.
They should have made a romantic comedy from the off; especially with that cast.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Authentic Star Wars - At Long Last.
The latest trilogy of Star Wars films are propagandised drivel, devoid of the human experience; devoid of soul - made for social media morons.
The Mandalorian (so far) is authentic Star Wars: Sexy, fun, edgy, intriguing & leaves you wanting more.
I so hope it doesn't get neo-Disney'd in later episodes.
Looking for Alaska (2019)
This is a good story devoid of any P.C. political agenda; which is refreshing.
The performances are solid as is the writing. It's well worth watching to the end.
Living with Yourself (2019)
Interesting & At Times fun - Room For Improvement
It's definitely worth a watch & more like a 6/7 out of 10, but, I gave it an 8 because, well, why not - this review is pointless & nobody will read it.
Rudd is excellent. Bea is okay.
Overall there is room for improvement & I will be watching season II (if there is a season II).
*It was just nice to watch a new show where Caucasian men aren't the source of all evil.
Hip Style, Hip Topic & No Substance
Victim-chic junkies of the world unite & take over - T.V.
The above is exactly what's happening these days & this adaptation of Watchmen is no different. Give the audience a break! Please!
Like the creator of Watchmen, I'm not American, ergo, I have no interest in internal US political fads. I want something more universal; which is what the original Watchmen offered.
Visually: It may induce epileptic fits. Narrative: Childlike (as subtle as a lump hammer).
N.B. It's not the audience's job to do the work.
It Chapter Two (2019)
Really Good Cast Wasted
It: Chapter 2 was all over the place. Pointless scenes, weaved into an already chopped narrative, leading to incoherence. The whole viewing was such a let down.
We Are Gathered Here (2019)
So Wet I Was Drenched After 5 Minutes
One of the wettest films I've ever seen. From the actors/acting & everything else - just wet. This is the parboiled result of middle class university educated millennials who are scared of their own shadows. Wet! Wet! Wet! With no sweet little mystery insight.
If this film was a tweet it would be second-hand outraged. If this film was surface cleaner it would be watered down lemon.
If I come across as being annoyed in this review, that's because I am. I wasted time on this dropped bowl of watery porridge.
Wu-Tang: An American Saga (2019)
Solid Piece Of Work - Entertaining
There's a real risk that projects like Wu-Tang: An American Saga can be overly romanticised & sanctimonious, but, so far, in this case, that has been avoided. The writing is solid as is the acting. Wu-Tang: An American Saga is entertaining & (so far) worth a watch - I hope it stays on its current path.
Bill Burr: Paper Tiger (2019)
Did The Job
Is a comedy show & it did the job - not much more to say really.
This Gay Black Man, Who Identifies As A Stright White Man, Liked It.
It's a comedy show. It's amusing & interesting. I liked it.
Look! I'm as big of a victim-chic junkie as the next pampered Western person, but, I can still laugh at jokes as long as the jokes don't involve me. None of the jokes in this show involved the things I care (or pretend to care) about, therefore, I could enjoy it.
Peaky Blinders: Black Tuesday (2019)
Oh! No! No! Not Peaky Blinders Too.
"It's 1929 & times have changed."
Just so disappointing. Art forsaken for propaganda & slow motion. We get it! Women are amazing - can you shove it a bit more down my throat please.
The boardroom scene is beyond cheesy.
Sometimes good intentions can fly so far right & so far left that they melt together with the same face masked with propagandizing elitist condescension. Those who claim oblivion are equally as guilty in spite of good intentions.
When art is propagandised it no longer becomes art. It just sits in the same room alongside other crimes against humanity.
I Have Rated This Film Using The STAR TREK Rating Scale: It's TNG (8)
I Have Rated This Film Using The STAR TREK Rating Scale:
STAR TREK (original series): 10
STAR TREK Discovery: 0
This film is worthy of a The Next Generation grade. Which is an 8.
TNG, is obviously more nuanced than this film, due to this film, being a film, as opposed to many televisual masterpieces (& several classic films). HOWEVER! I would rather bang Princess Leia than any of the magnificent actresses who so wonderfully weave their craft through STAR TREK TNG.
The Boys (2019)
If This Show Is A 9 What The Hell Is The Sopranos?
This show is not worth its current IMDB rating. If the show is a 9 what the hell is the Sopranos?
The opening scene is solid, but, it's downhill from there.
The show is the TV equivalent of a 15 year old girl's lunch time drama - It's nonsensical, tangent ridden & pseudo sincere.
3 stars for the opening scene.
Don't Take It Seriously & You'll Have Fun
If you don't take this show seriously you'll have fun. Just remember that the Batman world isn't real, therefore, you can forgive noticeable historical inaccuracies, which can, if you let them, snap you from the world of make-believe.
The aesthetic/style of Pennyworth has been influenced by English shows from the 60s (The Prisoner comes to mind) & it works. There's a bit of a Peaky Blinders vibe going on too.
Well written & acted, but, if it was just a little bit more reality & less comic, it could be fantastic.
Florida Girls (2019)
UK Inbetweeners Vibe Done Right In The US - With Girls.
Florida Girls has a UK Inbetweeners Vibe to the comedy style & it works.
Anything done well & honestly, with truth, devoid of agenda, has a good chance of working & Florida Girls works.
It's well written, amusing, relatable (especially to that working class gallows humour) & the girls are gorgeous, but, girl next door gorgeous, as opposed to that generic US entertainment (all teeth & no knickers) pretty. I'm a fan.
Funny & sexy - what's not to like?
This Awful Film Has A 6.6 Rating - Which Makes Me Doubt The Integrity Of IMDB
The Film, is genuinely, one of the most ridiculously flawed & boring (not even funny bad) movies I've seen in the past decade - it's really bad.
If this film was a wound it would be loosely bandaged with special effects.
It's just awful. The acting is awful. It's unfair having a go at a kid, but, the young lady from Stranger Things, simply hams all over the screen - a few acting lessons wouldn't go amiss. However, the whole cast are poor, then again, they had nothing to work with.
There is the obligatory heavy handed neo PC male-bad/female-good, intelligent, wise & strong theme running through the movie - which appears to be insidiously pumped into 90% of Hollywood blockbusters of late. Also, f-bombs (as our American cousins would say) are dropped - kids movie?
Engaging With A Sweet Melancholy - Sunday Afternoon Treat
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It held my interest & engaged my emotions. A Sunday afternoon treat.
The performances were excellent. The aesthetic & direction was effortlessly sound.
*Hoult would make an excellent bond.
Sun Dogs (2017)
Well Worth A Couple Of Hours On A Wednesday Evening Before Bed
I wasn't expecting much from this film, but, ended up rather liking it. It probably deserves 6 stars, but, I gave it 7 for the pleasant surprise.
Sun Dogs is well acted & proficiently put together. It won't rock any worlds & I don't think it's trying too - which adds to its charm.
Apparently this is Jennifer Morrison's first full length feature as director & much promise has been shown - not just a pretty face, albeit, an incredibly pretty one.
It's nice, give it a go, you may like it (that suspiciously reads like something someone would say when trying to convince a girlfriend to try anal sex for the first time).
Poorly Written, Directed, Cast... Just Disappointing.
They really messed this up. Where to start?
Ian McShane is a class act, but, his talent is lost in this mess. Everything with the film is wrong.
The casting is awful. Yeah! Sure there were black-Anglo gentry in 1940s England & okay, Hellboys aren't real either, but, you have to have something recognisable/real about the world to buy into the fantasy & Hellboy's wee pea-face means his lips can't be seen moving.
What was the point of the first 10 minutes?
This film is what you get when you give a 14 year old boy, who loves comics, millions & tell him to make a film.
Seriously! Why did Hellboy have a pea-head?
Was there any structure going on here?
Plus One (2019)
It's really good & I obviously enjoyed it. It's well written & acted.
It's the best romantic comedy I have seen in a while & deserves to be a hit. There's a moment when the lead female character's persona flips & it's heartbreaking.
It's just a good old Boy/Girl romcom - which is becoming a rarity. There is something for the majority of folk to relate to here.
Swamp Thing (2019)
Another Sci-Fi Sausage Churned Out From The Industry Machine.
Safe, steady/generic writing. Regurgitated style. Another sci-fi Bland sausage.
Forget diversity quotas, forget gender balance, can the entertainment industry please just get people in with fresh ideas, regardless of background, who can actually write & create accessible stories, without any other agenda, except that to entertain - the rest may or may not come.
I don't write the previous paragraph because this version of Swamp Thing has an agenda, I write it because it's jaded, boring & unoriginal.
We've seen it before!
Good Omens (2019)
It's Okay - It Should Of Been Better.
It's okay. There's not much more to say, except, it should of been better. I'm leaning on the generous side with a six star rating.
It's not cruel enough to be funny & too whimsical to scare. It's just a bit too pip-pip-tally-ho. If it had been rolled out with a stereo-typical Anglo-elitist cynical un-PC cutting cruel (unholy) edge, the gears may have clicked.
