Good storyteller with a good sense of humor.
23 February 2020
The first show I saw from him was Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up for the First Time (2017). I liked it and rated it with an eight. But I guess it wasn't his first stand-up comedy as The Charleston Special is from 2015. I liked it also, maybe not as much as the other show but it's certainly good enough for an easy and enjoyable hour of amusement. He's very interactive with the audience, he's never static on scene like some other comedians sometimes are, his humor is different but certainly not bad. Rory Scovel is just a good storyteller, he feels the audience and knows how to play them. He has good improvisation skills, it's all clearly not rehearsed word by word. If anything unusual happens during his show he will make it funny, that's what a good improvisor can do, something he clearly is.

The Thaw (2009)
7/10
Creepy buggers.
23 February 2020
I can see why people compare The Thaw to other movies, especially The Thing from John Carpenter from 1982. It's also taking place in an isolated place, a parasite that threatens to take over the world, but even though there are some similarities it's still a different story and movie. Mark A. Lewis for sure watched all those movies and got influenced, but then again which horror fan didn't? The Thaw is entertaining, it has creepy moments especially if you don't like bugs, the acting isn't bad at all, so I see absolutely nothing that justifies to rate this movie badly like some others did. I enjoyed it and I'm sure a lot of other horror fans will appreciate this movie as well.

Wildlike (2014)
7/10
Not a thriller, more a good drama.
22 February 2020
I wouldn't categorize Wildlike as a thriller, even though the plot could have gone that way, as for that there isn't enough suspense present in this movie. It's a drama, a well acted drama, with great sceneries in the background. Ella Purnell did a good job playing her character Mackenzie, as well as did Bruce Greenwood playing his character Bartlet. It's a slow paced movie, not much action but it doesn't need it as the story is strong enough to keep you interested. I don't know the budget, probably pretty low, but it's a proof you don't need a big budget to make a good movie. It's worth watching, just don't expect too much thrills as it's not that kind of movie.

Donald Cried (2016)
8/10
Giggling for the entire movie.
22 February 2020
Well that was much better than I expected. I had some really good laughs with Donald Cried. I watched it stoned what was even better, found myself giggling throughout the whole movie. The funny thing when reading other reviews is people mentioning we all know a Donald in our own life, and I couldn't agree more with that, but the really funny thing to me is that I know a Donald that could be a brother of Kris Avedisian, physically they look so alike it made this movie even funnier for me. Great performance of Kris Avedisian by the way, he just did an amazing job with his character Donald. The interaction between Kris Avedisian and Jesse Wakeman is just perfect. Both actors were in sync in this movie, made it very pleasant to watch. Low budget? yes, but high quality movie.

It's raw and honest, just what I like.
22 February 2020
I can only applaud stand-up comedians that don't care what you think about them. Doug Stanhope is a bit brutal, but it's the brutal truth, he might sound a bit vulgar but does it matter when it's funny? He tells it like it is, does have no boundaries, and that's a positive thing about his show. I can't disagree with his life visions as I think the same for almost every part of his monologue. I'm surprised this show doesn't have negative reviews on here, as I'm sure a lot of people would be offended. Doug isn't politically correct, and that's good, he doesn't try to please you, and that's even better. I'm glad he's proud of never working, not fitting in the system, being different than the masses, I'm exactly like that as well so I really enjoyed No Refunds. It was the first show I saw from him but will make sure I watch others.

Close your eyes instead, and go to sleep...
22 February 2020
Sometimes I wonder why I do this to myself? The movie has very low ratings, the reviews are almost all negative, and still I decide to watch this. Why do I do that? What's wrong with me? Should I not know better by now? Those are the questions that were wandering my mind during this snoozefest. Don't Open Your Eyes is one of those movies that goes nowhere, with an extremely slow story, not only slow but also boring. Some shots seem to last five minutes and they're not even that interesting after one second, let alone five minutes. The actors are mediocre, the old woman (I don't know her name, too lazy to look it up) is overacting but in a mediocre way. Don't make the same mistake I did, stay far away from this garbage.

Reality is harsher but this isn't reality, this is a movie.
21 February 2020
I get it that some other reviewers call this unrealistic, I really do. They probably saw their share of desperate junkies, I did as well, so comparing their life to this movie just doesn't work. The reality of heroin addiction is much worse and harsher than shown in this movie. But nevertheless A Thousand Junkies is well made, it's interesting to watch, it has some decent acting, and even though they don't look like hardcore-beyond-saving heroin addicts there are very recognizable stereotypes portrayed in this movie. The constant lying, the fake promises, never having a dime in their pockets, always looking to con, steal or do whatever it needs to be done to get their next fix, it's like watching the daily routine of any street junkie. I've lived in a big city, saw dozens of those zombies, knew some personally that drifted away from being normal to become a waste of space, so for that the story is accurate, but the reality is just so much worse. A Thousand Junkies is just a soft impression of addiction but it's enjoyable to watch.

Nothing new here.
21 February 2020
When you know it's a slasher you're going to watch your expectations are automatically lowered. It's just a genre where it's difficult to find a really good movie, I actually can't think of one slasher that I rated the highest possible score, not even close. Five stars for this movie is more than enough, and that's because I'm in a generous mood. The story has too much plot holes, the acting is so so, the slashing scenes are okay but nothing mindblowing. Even the hardcore fans of this genre will be a bit disappointed. Another slasher that will be forgotten by tomorrow.

The Boys (1998)
4/10
Highly overrated.
20 February 2020
The Boys is a movie with a high score, with extremely positive reviews, and that thricked me into watching it. Do I regret it? Kind of, as it's really nothing special. The acting is okay, nothing wrong about that aspect of the movie, but the story is boring, slow and too long, the timeline mostly confusing, the camerawork is half of the time shaky, in other words all ingredients for a mediocre movie. I don't get what people find extraordinary about The Boys, it's just a mess going nowhere.

Shrimps might be the solution from now on.
20 February 2020
The funny thing about bad reviews for stand-up comedy shows is that they always complain about the use of politics. Let's just say the 'right' has no sense of humor at all or has just a very low tolerance for irony, it's always them complaining, I never saw it the other way round. First of all comedy should be about anything and everything, you have to be able to laugh about anything, because it's just a joke, it isn't real. Second of all Al Madrigal's show wasn't very political at all so disliking his show with these poor arguments is pretty sorry. That you don't find it funny is one thing, but here that political argument just doesn't make any sense at all. Anyway, this was my first and certainly not last show from Al Madrigal. He's a good storyteller, easy to listen to, nice vocabulary and a good stage presence, but most importantly good jokes and anecdotes. I just watch a stand-up comedy to laugh a bit, have a bit of fun, and that's exactly what I got with this show, some good laughter and easy entertainment. Note to myself for the next time I get really mad: just go buy some shrimps.

For the easily offended, just do us a favor and skip it.
20 February 2020
I don't know Big Jay Oakerson, never heard of him before so this is a first for me. I see the reviews are divided between love and hate. The truth is somewhere in the middle. His humor is mostly vulgar, but that's fine as long as it's funny (what it was to me). The reviews with the lowest score possible are from prudes, people that are stuck somewhere in the Middle Ages, bible thumpers that are easily offended. I'm just wondering why they watch such a show in the first place? To me Big Jay Oakerson's show has positive and negative things. The possitive would be the good jokes (dirty yes, but does that matter when it's funny?), good interaction with the audience (some improv with the audience but I'm pretty sure it's rehearsed improv as you will always find a couple that is already married, is going to marry etc... so not really complete improvisation), overall a good stage presence. The negative would be his little laugh, giggling or puffing or whatever it is he does between jokes (it's his way of laughing so he can't really help it but I find it slightly annoying). I did enjoy his show and will look for more.

Fake reviews have the opposite effect as now unsatisfied viewers will bomb it, let that be a lesson.
20 February 2020
Here we go again for another round of fake reviews (the perfect tens have only reviewed this movie as usual). I don't need to explain why that is, it's pretty obvious. So here is a review from somebody that reviews every movie he watches. Beyond The Woods fails as a horror movie because the horror is just not present. Or they must have thought that those mediocre 'horror' scenes counted as scary. It all looks very amateuristic. The acting is just average, nothing really bad, nothing really good. The story is poorly written, really nothing interesting, a plot that is underdeveloped, it's basically waiting for answers you will never get. It doesn't matter that it is a low budget (it shows though) as I've seen a lot of good low budget movies but this one isn't one of them.

Credits to the sculptors and animators.
19 February 2020
Aardman Animations, that alone is almost a guarantee for this picture to be a good animation movie. With this sequel of Shaun The Sheep they deliver again. It's a bit of fun for all ages, I'm fifty-one and I also enjoyed it, it's even better when you had a couple puffs of the magic dragon. I always watch movies with subtitles but with this one you really don't need any as there is not one known word spoken, it's all strange noises, facial expressions, but it works very well. Even with the end credits I laughed when I saw the voice-overs for all the characters because it's basically just animal impersonations that you hear. I can't imagine the amount of time the sculptors and animators worked on this project but it's clearly done by the best.

Demons (I) (2017)
5/10
A bit boring to be honest.
19 February 2020
I'm not as overly enthusiastic as some other honest reviewers (the perfect tens with one review (we all know them) will never count as honest reviewers) that gave Demons a decent score. I found the story to be a bit of a mess, a bit boring, not fully exploited. The twist in the end was predictable, at least to me, it could have been more elebaroted to make it a better movie. The positive point would be the acting for me. There are some quality actors that make a movie watchable, but that doesn't mean the movie was good. To me it's just an average movie that I will probably have forgotten all about it by tomorrow.

Dirty 30 (2016)
7/10
I had some good laughs, exactly what I want from a comedy.
19 February 2020
Dirty 30 is the typical comedy you watch just to have a nice evening of easy entertainment, nothing too fancy, just some quirky situations that lead to some funny scenes. Don't expect a complicated story, just enjoy the lighthearted comedy. The acting isn't bad at all for this kind of movie, all the characters add something funny to the comedy, to me the most funny one was Richard/Raven played by Adam Lustick but the rest did well as well. I'm sure there will be a ton of people that don't find it funny, but then again there are also a ton of people I wouldn't hang out with, so that evens it out. Dirty 30 is a good movie in its genre.

Most sarcastic show I've ever seen.
18 February 2020
I only knew David Cross from Arrested Development (which I loved by the way), I had no clue he did also stand-up comedy. So this was his first show for me and even though I thought it was a bit slow in the beginning I quickly changed my mind when I realized what a genious he is. I love sarcasm, it's my favorite kind of humor, but I never witnessed a more sarcastic show as Making America Great Again. Absolutely everything he says is sarcasm, the kind that makes you think about essential things, truths that don't like to be divulged. After reading thirteen reviews on here (12 bad ones and one good one) I'm not surprised at all that so many people hated it. You have to have some intelligence to understand his sarcasm and sadly the world is full of dumb and ignorant people, which shows in the negative reviews. But everybody is entitled to it's opinion, that's how it works. Anyway, if you like sarcasm and if you have a higher IQ than the average caveman there's a high chance you will enjoy this show.

Long Lost (2018)
7/10
Twisted and intriguing story.
18 February 2020
Long Lost has some good things going for it. The best thing would be the plot, that is innovative and interesting at the same time. It changes from the same boring stories we're used to. The story is intriguing, it will keep you guessing what's going on, and it has some sexual tension building all the way through the movie. The acting wasn't bad at all, with some twisted characters that made it worth watching. The actual ratings it get are a bit harsh, it just deserves a higher rating.

The Hole (2001)
6/10
A bit predictable, no real mystery to me here.
17 February 2020
Overall The Hole isn't a bad movie but in my humble opinion they could have made that story better. My wife liked the movie a bit more than me, she scored it a seven what in our family means we would watch it again but I wouldn't go that far, a six looked more appropriate. A mystery/thriller has to have some suspense, which I thought lacked in The Hole. I figured the whole thing out after half an hour and I'm not a new Sherlock Holmes or so. It was just a bit too predictable and the actors can do better normally, all of them were not that convincing. But it's watchable, perfect to kill time if you have enough of that.

Still not very convincing.
17 February 2020
The first stand-up comedy I watched from Hannibal Buress was Comedy Camisado from 2016, I gave it a five star rating as I wasn't impressed at all, but I said I would give him another chance and watch another show of him to see if it was still that bland. Unfortunately it is, Animal Furnace is slightly better but still it isn't that great. I don't know what it exactly is, maybe his stage presence that makes him looking very shy. He barely looks the audience in the face, he has more a stare that looks upwards like he's trying to remember his lines, it just doesn't feel very natural. His jokes vary from mediocre to good, there's actually not one joke I remember and I just watched his show yesterday, so that's already not really a good thing. To me Hannibal Buress lacks stage presence, he's much too static, not interacting with the audience, and his jokes could just be better. I'll give it one more try with another show but I fear that will be the last one as I can't really see progress.

Pitch Black (2000)
5/10
Vin Diesel, not immediatly a guarantee for success if you ask me.
16 February 2020
I normally do like these kind of movies, sci-fi with a bit of horror, like Aliens, so I had high expectations for Pitch Black. But there are problems with this movie. First of all you have Vin Diesel. With all due respect he's just not a good actor, he has the charisma of an amoeba. What people see in him I will never get. But it's not only him, the storyline is full of plot holes, little annoying things that make no sense. I'm not going to say anything about it, don't want to spoil a movie, but you'll figure it out by yourself when you watch it. It's a mystery to me why this movie gets such a high rating. I wish I liked it more but it's not the case.

I was expecting a boring movie considering the ridiculous low ratings from some ignorant reviewers.
16 February 2020
Rating this movie with the lowest score possible is just ridiculous. People should think a bit about it before rating movies, as a one star movie is just awful, almost unwatchable, and in this case Daniel Isn't Real is certainly watchable. I get it that not everybody will love it but just rate it honestly. If you like movies like Donnie Darko (2001) or Split (2016) you should enjoy this one as well. The other two mentioned are way better, no doubt about that, but Daniel Isn't Real has some good moments. The acting was good, really can't say anything bad about that even if I tried my best, the story is certainly entertaining to follow, the cinematography was way better than I expected it to be. Just do me a favor and rate your movies correctly, stop with those perfect tens for average movies, and certainly stop with insulting one star ratings for movies like this one.

Trippy like Trainspotting but not better.
15 February 2020
The movie poster states that this makes Trainspotting looking like a mild-mannered youth comedy. I can see some resemblance here and there, the trippy way of filming, both movies based on novels by Irvine Welsh, or having Ewen Bremner acting in both, but Danny Boyle's trainspotting is just a bit better in my opinion. The Acid House is fun to watch though, who doesn't like to watch some white Scottish ghetto trash in their daily habitat? The Acid House is three different stories (segments), The Granton Star Cause, A Soft Touch, and The Acid House. Each story has his moments, some are better than others, The Acid House was the most trippy and crazy to watch, with an excellent Ewen Bremner (playing a junkie character is apparently what he does the best). The movie is a bit graphic, just the way I like it, but I can see some people (nerds and/or bible thumpers) getting offended. Anyway if you liked Trainspotting there is no doubt in my mind you will like this one as well.

More a book promotion than a comedy but pleasant to listen to.
15 February 2020
Before watching More Fool Me I thought it was going to be a stand-up comedy so my mind was prepared for that. It's not what I got as it's more a book promotion than anything else. So not much comedy here, even though there are a couple funny passages, but it's always pleasant to hear Stephen Fry talk. He masters the English language (and some others) like nobody else and has interesting views on many topics so it is interesting to listen to him. His speech made me think about some essential things of life so for that alone it's worth a watch. Stephen Fry is an interesting person, one that stands out of the masses and that makes this speech not a complete waste of time but a speech where you could learn a thing or two, and learning a thing is always a bonus.

Sir, did you notice the lobster in your neck?
15 February 2020
I wasn't expecting too much from this movie, horror and comedy mixed together isn't really the genre where you find a lot of gems. But in all fairness I was pretty surprised by the outcome. I had more laughs then with a standard comedy so for that alone it's worth the detour. The "lobster in the neck" had me in tears, that's going to be a cult phrase, for sure in my entourage. Storywise it is what it is, some people are entertained by this kind of stories (I was for sure), others will think it's ridiculous. The horror wasn't bad at all, the acting neither, but the humoristic touch is what makes this movie stand out from the rest. I recommend this movie, especially if you're a stoner and like an odd and weird story, nothing to take too seriously.

I think they tried to bore Jessica to death, me included.
14 February 2020
I only watched this old movie because I read some very positive reviews about it on IMDb. Some pretending and I quote "it scared the bejesus out of me", sounded mysterious and promising, but the reality is that this movie is below average. Maybe fifty years ago it had something, which I doubt if to be honest, but to me it just didn't do anything. The acting is what to expect from movies from that time, it all looked forced and it's just not good. The story is very weak, not elaborated enough, not scary at all, in other words to me it's not a mystery/horror. The only mystery is how the hell did it got such high ratings? The horror is me wasting my time with movies like this one.
