Doctor Sleep (2019)
A sequel which is worthy
Doctor Sleep, releasing after 40 years of the original, was one of the anticipated movies of this year. I must say that it didn't disappoint. Mike Flanagan, known for his direction of horror movies like Oculus, The Haunting of Hill House was given the task and he ensured he did it right.
I can't say it was better than the first one but yes it was indeed a to see Danny Torrance once again and this was more supernatural than being violent.
I would go with 3.5/5 for Doctor Sleep
The King (2019)
Could have been better
Timothy Chalamet gave an amazing performance portraying King Henry V, however the stretched duration and a slow paced conversation made this movie wanting less. Alongside Timothy, Joel Edgarton did well and the rest were just fitting enough. The fight scene at the near end of the movie was a good and structured altogether.
I will go with 2.5/5 for "The King"
This movie was delayed a lot and I felt the reason behind releasing it directly to Netflix and not in theatres. It was dumb with no storyline whatsoever and an extremely bad CGI that looked like 90s video games, added a cherry to the cake.
I would heavily recommend not to see this movie in your lifetime.
I am giving my best that I can give to this movie 0.5/5
Saand Ki Aankh (2019)
Hit the Bull's Eye
This Taapsee and Bhumi starrer is an absolute pleasure to watch showcasing the strength of women and the way it is dealt with, on a daily basis in the mediocre mindset society.
There were very few hiccups but overall, whether there should have been more reality in the story or whatever, the acting as well the storytelling was very good.
I will give 4.5/5
The script, acting and everything in this movie was terrible. Anvari went awfully wrong in directing this. This was supposed to be a horror film, but neither it was spooky and scary nor it was tense. An instant forgettable film
I will give 0.5/5
A twisted ending
The movie was altogether not boring at all. It kept me hooked but to be frank, the ending was unexpected and I was not much impressed by it. The story was good, the movie with a more definitive ending could have been better. Scares and tense of 75 minutes turned into an exorcism game in the last 15 minutes.
I would go with 3/5 for 'Eli'
The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
Missed from being a decent enough one in The Conjuring Franchise
The Curse of La Llorona promised a scary venture post the trailer however the movie was not upto the mark. Although there were few jump scares which were actually good enough to scare the heart out of you, however given the storyline, I believe the screenplay and Direction could have been more tight. For me it was a strictly average and not a bad one. Atleast It got better than the last one (The Nun).
I would go with 2.5/5 for "The Curse of La Llorona" which could have been better given the fact it had great storyline.
Love, Death & Robots (2019)
It's an insanely crafted and ground breaking storytelling
Probably the best of Netflix to be released this year and these 18 short stories with an amazing Animation Effects and brilliance in story concept is an eye-catcher. Except for couple of Episodes, the other were brutal, fascinating as well as backed by brilliant writing. This is a must watch, even though it may be highly explicit and filled with nudity.
Luka Chuppi (2019)
No fun in this emotional drained awareness movie
I admit that there was I hype for this movie especially after Aaryan's fame in Sonu Ki Titu Ki Sweety and even I had my some level of excitement for this. But the movie was too chaotic and the story wasn't stable and the characters were feeling pretty messed up in themselves. The only bit positive thing in the whole drama was the songs (even they all were remake) that to some extent lit the mood. I am not sure even if this is a One Time Watch but have it your money spent on this hyped but disappointing Rom-Com..
Isn't It Romantic (2019)
Rom-Com but not the clever one
Ignoring the reviews, positive or negative, I personally didn't liked the movie quite much. The story was strictly average and maybe the screenplay and the acting of this cast could have been much better. Nonetheless I would say Rebel Wilson does the best of her and she's is the only silver lining of this otherwise not so clever film.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
A heavy and well built up Art Satire
Dan Gilroy after a disappointment with Roman.J Israel teams up again with :The Nightcrawler' actor Jake Gyllenhaal and gives one of the bizarre yet effective Horror thriller which engrosses its viewers till the end. The storyline was bit loose but narrative structure and the well acted part of this ensemble cast made the movie to be a positive watch
My Rating : 3.7/5
Short but great action packed
Mads Mikkelsen was great in otherwise a bit loose narratively driven movie. The action sequences were good even though at the times it stretched itself too much but it pleased my eyes. Adapted from a novel, I won't say it was one of the best but was worth a watch for the action and Mikkelsen's raw image on screen
Sex Education (2019)
A series for every teen
Netflix has indeed brought us with a Series which every Teenager needs to give a watch as each of em' goes through such situations when about reaching to Puberty. The Actors were great and so was the content with not so Vulgar talks but fantasized and sensible Sex talks.
Bird Box (2018)
A decent enough take for a suspense
BirdBox even though wasn't convincing in the Climax was good enough to make the viewers continuously think of what's coming next. Although the story and the ending could have been more tight but it was satisfactory enough to give it a thumbs up
It was dark but blatant
Mowgli was expected to match the attention which 'The Jungle Book' created couple of years back. The movie was dull and there was just no moment (except the Shere Khan vs Mowgli Fight at the end) which was eye pleasing or something which I can say better than the Jon Favreau directorial. This is totally disappointing and Andy Serkis failed to deliver the magic which Jon Favreau gave us. Neither the not so Special Effects nor the star studded Cast could help this movie to gain accomplishment.
A visual spectacle although having many flaws
2.0 is finally here and damn I was amazed to watch it in the theatre. Shankar's vision paid off and it can be said that it indeed matched with the special effects of Hollywood. Even though the story wasn't so strong and the first half was just about the mystery of why the mobile phones got disappeared. The second half was amazing and Akshay Kumar especially was at his best as an antagonist. This is a definite watch and no excuse to be given to miss such a level of a cinematic experience.
Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018)
The sequel pleases us as well
Ralph Breaks the Internet gets a thumbs up from the critics as well as audiences which includes me. With a colourful and vibrant effects and a technical storyline the sequel is as better as its predecessor was. I believe it would be a visual treat to the children as well as the Adults and a perfect movie to watch out this Thanksgiving..
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
One of the hilarious yet smart movie by Coen Brothers
Comprising of 6 different stories from the west, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a perfect blend of Comedy, Action and Music with an outstanding direction with brilliant screenplay and cinematography. After the not do well gone Hail Caesar, Coen Brothers comes out with a gem to please its audiences and their fans again..
A disappoinment for its predecessor
Hopes were high with the sequel to keep on continuing the fame and praise it built with the first installment. But the reviews came in and even for me personally, the second installment was a disappoinment. Even though it had a quite good VFX charisma and few brilliant shots, the overall plot and characters were a letdown who tried their best but couldn't spell its magic like the Harry Potter series..
The Grinch (2018)
The Grinch stole my heart
The Grinch is a colourful and visual spectacle and a guaranteed joyride for the children and even for the adults too. Even though the critics response were mixed, I suggest every person with his family should have a go for this one. Benedict Cumberbatch nailed as witty yet emotional 'The Grinch'..
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
And finally a beautifully crafted horror genre series by Netflix
I actually am a lover of horror movies and invest my time in watching those. The Haunting in Hill House is a beautifully crafted masterpiece by Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Hush) who is a master in this genre. The tense pace and an outstanding storyline with all round cast petformance make this series a must watch. Sometimes predictable yet grasping through its spine chilling environment, The Hill House is a 'must see' series for all the viewers
Good concept but very poorly executed
Director Ben Young had this good plot but mediocre acting by the leads, very cheap and unimpressive Special Effects and bad screenplay makes this Netflix Original a total skip. Heavily using the idea of A.I, the movie failed to connect the emotions with the technology.
My Rating : 1/5
Another fast paced and thrilling action continuing the franchise
Ageless, riveting and seemingly unstoppable, Tom Cruise remains a force of nature in this Mission: Impossible franchise. The sixth film in the series is among the most outstanding, delivering a near-exhausting amount of fantabulous action sequences paired with deft character drama and the requisite life-or-death stakes. At nearly two-and-a-half hours, Fallout has ambitions as vast as its running time. McQuarrie weaves elements of tragedy and political commentary into action packed crime thriller.
Incredibles 2 (2018)
Sequel worth waiting for
Though it would be unrealistic to expect "Incredibles 2" to have quite the genre-busting surprise of the original, it is as good as it can be without that shock of the new - delivering comedy, adventure and all too human moments with a generous hand. "Incredibles 2" takes advantage of the advances in computer animation since the first film came out, and the family's adventures look snappier and super-exciting, but it is the echoes of the original (including a dynamic new score by the returning Michael Giacchino) that hook us. It surely exceeded the expectations.
Bayona continues the rich legacy of Jurassic series
Being a fan of Jurassic movies, it was already in my anticipated movies list and yes I liked it (even though not so exceptional). It was more thoughful and interesting than its predecessor. J.A Bayona did a decent job in maintaining the legacy of this series and not letting its characters as well as its plot loose. This movie may be your worth a while for this weekend, especially for the Fans of Jurassic series.
